location
The holiday town is located about 22 kilometers north of Hurghada directly on the Red Sea and has an area of 4.8 × 1.8 km. The southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula is about 80 km away in a north-northeast direction.
history
The Egyptian entrepreneur Samih Sawiris had the foundation stone laid for this holiday area in April 1989. The facility is the flagship project of its Orascom group , which largely owns the facility. El-Guna was built in a mixture of traditional Nubian style and modern architecture; Above all, native materials such as clay and natural stone were used. The city consists of 14 different hotels, and the individual quarters are connected to one another by pedestrian bridges. Private individuals bought or buy residential property here.
Infrastructure
El-Guna has developed and mostly asphalted shopping streets, around 100 restaurants in all directions, a public transport network with buses, taxis and boats, its own security service ( El Gouna Security ), several schools, a campus of the TU Berlin , a branch of the Alexandria library , a church and a mosque . Furthermore, el-Guna has its own telephone network and guarantees accessibility via mobile phone . There is also a hospital equipped according to European standards, a dentist, a decompression chamber for divers and a pharmacy in the village. There is also a small airport for private or charter planes. The Hurghada International Airport is located twenty kilometers south. Water treatment plants deliver fresh water in El Guna. The wastewater from the hotels is filtered in treatment plants and used to irrigate the hotel gardens and the 18-hole golf course.
The Abu Tig Marina offers 117 berths for boats and yachts up to 40 m in length. North of the Abu Tig Marina , the large New Marina was opened in 2009 for yachts up to 60 m in length. There is also the smaller Abydos marina at the southern end of the city.
Sports
- El-Guna offers the possibility of practicing traditional water sports and scuba diving . There are several diving centers in town, which offer dives mainly from diving boats . - Kite surfing can be practiced here, benefiting from the consistently strong southern wind .
