El Gouna Football Club ( Arabic نادي الجونة, DMG Nādī l-Ǧūna ), El Gouna FC for short , is an Egyptian football club based in El Gouna , Hurghada , Egypt. The club currently plays in the Egyptian Premier League , the highest Egyptian football league and is also known as The Gounies .
history
In July 2003 the entrepreneur Samih Sawiris , who also founded the city of El Gouna in 1989, founded El Gouna FC. In its first season, the club played in the fourth Egyptian division, where he already won the first title and secured promotion to the third Egyptian division. In the 2008/09 season, the club managed to rise to the Egyptian Premier League for the first time in its history.
In 2009 El Gouna FC completed a training camp in the canton of Uri in Switzerland , where they played a training match against FC Luzern , in which Sawiris is now also an investor.
Between 2015 and 2018, the Gounies played three seasons in the Egyptian Second Division in Group A and were promoted back to the Premier League in the 2018/19 season.
