House of Money (original title: La casa de papel , literally "Das Haus des Papiers") is a Spanish television series by Álex Pina , which, in the style of a heist movie, tells the story of an attack and hostage-taking of the Spanish banknote printing company (part or season 1 and 2) or the Spanish Central Bank (seasons 3 and 4).
The series was first broadcast in Spain on May 2, 2017 on Antena 3 . The first nine episodes were released in German as 13 episodes on December 22, 2017 on Netflix in a newly edited version that was shortened to around 50 minutes . The remaining six episodes were re-edited as nine episodes on April 6, 2018 on Netflix. According to its own information, House of Money is the most-watched non-English-language series on Netflix internationally.
On July 19, 2019, Netflix published part 3 with eight episodes and on April 3, 2020 the fourth part with eight episodes.
In mid-October 2019, a spokesman for the production company Vancouver Media confirmed that Netflix had commissioned two more parts of the series and a spin-off. The fifth part should appear in September 2020 and the sixth part in March 2021. Probably due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the fifth season with ten new episodes will be the last season.
action
Part 1
(Antena 3 episodes 1-9, Netflix episodes 1-13)
A mysterious man who only describes himself as a professor organizes the biggest robbery in the history of Spain with the help of eight specialists. Together they want to infiltrate the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre , the banknote printing company in Spain, in order to print their own banknotes. To protect their identity and avoid personal ties, the eight other criminals name themselves after major cities: Tokyo , Berlin , Rio , Helsinki , Oslo , Moscow , Denver and Nairobi ; some real names become known as the series progresses. The goal is to complete the robbery with a total of 2.4 billion euros . To do this, they need eleven days of access to the money printers and that requires a sophisticated plan to dupe the special forces of the Spanish police.
The series shows how people in tense situations begin to oppose the plan, or to do everything to make the plan work. One of the hostages, who was previously in a relationship with the bank manager, falls in love with Denver. Motivated by the director of the banknote printing company Arturo Román , a group of hostages manage to escape, seriously injuring Oslo.
Part 2
(Antena 3 episodes 10-15, Netflix episodes 14-22)
The hostage, who fell in love with Denver, joins the bank robbers and is henceforth nicknamed Stockholm as a reference to the Stockholm Syndrome . Oslo is killed by Helsinki because of his injuries. Since the professor also gets into trouble and his people in the bank don't hear from him for a while, Tokyo doubts him and wants to go on on their own. Berlin, who is in command, opposes it and, after an argument with Tokyo, delivers her to the police. With the help of the professor, she is freed and returns, with Moscow being fatally wounded in the hail of bullets.
But the professor has much bigger problems: he falls in love with chief inspector Raquel Murillo, who reciprocates his feelings. Little does she suspect that her friend is the professor. After she has exposed him, he succeeds after verbal and physical arguments to get her on his side: He and his people do not want anything bad, only money that is not even taken away from someone to escape from their bad circumstances and a new one To begin life. The inspector decides to cooperate and puts her job and custody of her daughter at risk. Towards the end, Berlin turns out to be the half-brother of the professor who suffers from an incurable disease. To enable the others to escape, he sacrifices himself in the hail of bullets of the special unit pursuing them.
The gang manages to escape with the money in time. Disguised they leave the hangar one by one or in pairs with forged ID cards in order to start their new life. Helsinki and the professor take the money away in a truck.
There follows a leap in time of one year; Raquel Murillo has resigned. On TV she sees a report from the bank robbery. She looks for the postcards the professor gave her; she should have chosen a destination. On the back of the cards she discovers a secret message: The professor left a coordinate. She flies to the destination and meets the professor who was waiting for her.
part 3
(Netflix episodes 23-30)
Two years after the attack, the group's members are scattered around the world. The professor and the former Inspectora Raquel are located in Palawan , Philippines , Nairobi and Helsinki in La Pampa , Argentina , Denver and Mónica in Java , Indonesia , and Tokyo and Rio on an island in Guna Yala , Panama . Tokyo longs for a change and plans to leave the island. To keep in touch, Rio gives her a satellite phone. After three days, Rio calls Tokyo, but the call is traced and Rio is arrested. Tokyo can barely escape and gets to the professor in Thailand, who then gathers the rest of the group in a monastery in Italy to plan the rescue of Rio. The Inspectora Alicia Sierra tortures him at an unknown location (similar to a black site ) in order to reveal the whereabouts of the other members. The group is planning a break into the Bank of Spain , the Spanish central bank, and is apparently targeting the gold stored there. The plan came from Berlin, and the professor wants to pay tribute to it. Through the break-in, they also want to get the government's attention and publicly raise awareness of Rio's illegal treatment and force the state to open a due process of law. This time, Raquel, under her code name Lisbon, a friend of the late Berlin and two new henchmen, are there for the attack. Together with Raquel, the professor directs the break-in from outside from a mobile command center.
After the bank was broken into and the gold was recovered from the vault and melted down, the real goal of the group emerges: Secret government documents that are also kept in the vault. For the time being, the group can hold back the police by threatening publication. However, this then publishes incorrect data, and so the secret documents from the vault become useless.
After a special task force was captured by the group, the professor negotiated about the release of Rio: 40 hostages as well as the special task force. After the swap is complete, Arturo Román jumps through the closing security door into the bank at the last second. He has written a book about his hostage-taking and sees himself as a hero, but longs for Stockholm or Mónica Gaztambide. However, she is no longer interested in him and does not want Arturo to meet their son. The professor and Raquel are being followed by the police far away from the bank. The professor just manages to hide in a tree, Raquel retreats into a barn. After Rio is allowed back to the group, he breaks up with Tokyo, which then gets drunk. Raquel is discovered by two farmers who are after the 10 million euro reward and is finally arrested by the police. The Inspectora Alicia Sierra fakes a shooting of Raquel by the police in order to break the professor and thus the group psychologically through her death. Nairobi is meanwhile lured by Sierra with a ruse to a window and shot by a sniper. The group tries everything to save Nairobi, which is bleeding badly, while the police plan to use the hustle and bustle to break into the bank with an armored car. In response to Raquel's alleged killing, the professor calls war, authorizing all means to be used. Rio and Tokyo fire at the armored vehicle with anti-tank guns and thus prevent the intrusion at the last second, but violate their golden rule that no blood should flow.
Part 4
(Netflix episodes 31-38)
After the protagonists open fire on the police, they try to save Nairobi with a makeshift operation by removing the bullet and the part of the lung where the bullet is stuck. After this succeeds, despite the broken connection to a surgeon, a dispute breaks out. Palermo, whose command was removed and handed over to Tokyo, swaps his red overalls for a suit and wants to leave the bank. He is stopped in the last second by Tokyo and Helsinki, who tie him up with chains and take him hostage. In the meantime, Lisbon is brought to Madrid to the police negotiation center in front of the bank. There she is interrogated in solitary confinement by Sierra, who blackmailed her by arresting her mother and daughter.
The professor can escape from the police officers and get back to the base with the help of a new accomplice, “Marseille”. Together with Marseille, he blackmailed a policeman who works in the tent of the police headquarters in front of the bank. From him he learns that Lisbon is still alive. He is planning a complicated rescue operation.
The security chief Gandía des Gobernador of the Bank of Spain, who is handcuffed among the hostages, is incited by Palermo to free himself from the handcuffs by dislocating his wrist. He succeeds. Rio tries to stop him, but cannot bring himself to shoot the hostage because he suffers from PTSD due to his torture in Part 3 .
The security chief Gandía holed up in the panic room and began a systematic hunt for the hostage takers. He kidnaps Tokyo into his panic room and keeps her prisoner there.
Nairobi is awake. She is given a makeshift wheelchair because she cannot move after the operation. It turns out that Bogota is in love with her, she finally returns his love and the two kiss while hunting Gandía. Palermo is brought back into the team by the professor. The situation worsens when the security chief manages to kidnap Nairobi and hold him in a toilet. After an attempted rescue operation, he shoots Nairobi in front of the others and escapes, whereupon Denver pursues him. He manages to ram a splinter into his neck with a grenade. The security chief collapses in the panic room. Tokyo and the others manage to fix Gandía and he is now in the care of the protagonists. The professor and his team manage to bring Lisbon into the bank through a daring liberation campaign. The professor recently managed to defame the police and the government in the public media and to prove that Rio was unlawfully treated and tortured. The team is now complete and promises to win the war “for Nairobi”. In the last scene of Part 4, the pregnant Commissioner Sierra, who has started her own investigation after she was withdrawn from the case because of the media allegations of torturing Rio, stands in the professor's command center . Sierra had found pictures of the license plate on the professor's vehicle when the police officer was bribed. This enabled her to locate the professor's control room. He was now alone, as Marseille was given another task for the rescue operation. She threatens him with her gun. That ends part 4.
