Puerto Princesa is the capital of the Philippine province of Palawan .
geography
The area of the Highly Urbanized City is located in the middle of the island of Palawan and extends over its entire width. It is bordered to the north by the parishes of San Vicente and Roxas , and to the south by Aborlan . The actual city, where three quarters of the population live, is located on a peninsula on Puerto Princesa Bay on the east coast. On the west coast is the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park . The Ulugan Bay is southwest of the national park and marks the narrowest point on the island of Palawan. Thumb Peak rises in the south of the urban area .
history
The city was officially founded on March 4, 1872. The name Puerto de la Princesa refers to Princess María Eulalia of Spain. In 1911 the provincial administration of Palawan was moved from Taytay here. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1961 on the site of the first mass after its foundation, and the city was elevated in 1970. Since 1994, Puerto Princesa has been the seat of the University of Palawan.
Politics economy
Mayor has been Lucilo R. Bayron since 2013, his predecessor was Edward S. Hagedorn . Puerto Princesa was the first municipality in the Philippines to introduce standardized rubbish bins and a waste separation system. Since 2010, the conversion of auto rickshaws to electric motors has been advertised (so-called e-tricycles ).
An important branch of the economy is tourism, the city is the tourist hub of the province of Palawan . Tourist attractions include the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park , the Palawan Museum, a crocodile farm ( Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center ), a partially open prison ( Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm ) and the coral reefs of Honda Bay. Puerto Princesa is also the starting point for visits to the Tubbataha Reef . From time to time cruise ships call at Puerto Princesa .
The city has an international airport and a deep water port with regular ferry connections to Manila and Iloilo .
