Bella ciao is a song that became famous in the version of the Italian partisans during World War II . It developed into one of the hymns of the anti-fascist , anarchist , communist and social democratic movements.

history

The melody of the song Bella ciao in the Mondine version was sung by rice pickers in the former Italian province of Terre d'Acqua near the city of Bologna at the beginning of the 20th century . It laments the harsh working conditions under the blazing sun. The version, documented for the first time in 1906, already bears the features of a protest song against the boss, who “with a stick in hand” supervises the work, “eats up” the lives of women and on top of that pays little. But one day, the narrator hopes, women will work “in freedom”.

The song became known worldwide in its adaptation by the Resistancea , the Italian resistance movement against fascism during the Second World War . The text, the author of which is unknown, praises the partisans ' struggle for freedom and commemorates their dead, who are viewed as heroes. The song is one of the most famous battle songs in left circles and is still opposed to the fascist battle song Faccetta Nera by leftists . Like many songs of the labor movement , it has been translated into numerous languages.

In 2016, the song was played at the funeral ceremony of the Italian author and filmmaker Dario Fo .

On May 20, 2020, the song was played out of several mosque speakers in the Turkish city of Izmir instead of the call to prayer. The hacking action spread on social media. The authorities were investigating for “denigrating religious values”. The spokesman for the ruling AKP party spoke of a "heinous act".

Due to the sudden popularity of the song in 2018 by the Spanish television series Haus des Geldes , a large number of new cover versions were released, which also made it into the single charts in various countries. Here, too, the explanations were very different. The original sample, which comes from the series and is interpreted by El Profesor and Berlin, is part of a remix by the Marseille DJ and producer Florent Hugel , who made it into the charts in Germany, Belgium and France and was published by GfK Entertainment for "Official" summer hit 2018 was declared. In Germany, a German rap version by the three rappers Juri , Sun Diego and Scenzah and a pop version by Mike Singer were also successful.
