Talco is an Italian ska-punk - band from Marghera , Venice , which was founded in the year 2000/2001. The band name comes from the Italian name for talc , which the band members said they used to fool around with in their childhood.

history

In 2000 Talco began to play their first concerts under the name "Talco Mentolato". In April 2001 they won a band competition with Aurora on Stage . In the same year they released the first studio demo and changed their name to "Talco". Afterwards they played exclusively live until they released Tutti Assolti in 2004 . The line-up changed slightly several times.

After further tours in Italy, Germany and Switzerland, their second album, Combat Circus , was released in early 2007 , and a video was also produced for the song “La Carovana”. This was followed by appearances at the Move against G8 Festival in Berlin and a small tour of Germany in autumn. After this tour, there was a little change in the band, as Terra (trumpet) and Keko (bass) two long-time members left the band.

The band went straight to the new album, which was released in April 2008 in the form of “Mazel Tov”. As with the two predecessors, the record-release party took place in her hometown on April 25th, the day Italy was liberated from fascism. Two tours through Germany followed in May and November, as well as numerous festival appearances during the summer.

The culmination of the successful year came at the beginning of 2009 when they sold out the legendary SO36 in their stronghold of Berlin and gave a similarly large show in their hometown of Venice. After tours in Spain and Croatia, they could be seen at festivals almost every weekend in the summer of 2009 and gave further concerts in Germany in the autumn. In September 2009 Talco changed their record company and have since been under contract with the Berlin label Destiny Records , where the last two albums were reissued at the end of 2009.

In October 2009 the benefit single St. Pauli was released , on which, in addition to the version already known from the Mazel Tov album, there is also a version sung in German (after the release, the song was often played in the Millerntor Stadium ). The proceeds of this single go completely to the Fanzimmer e. V. In spring 2010 the band was back in the studio to record their new record. In the time up to the release, appearances at numerous festivals all over Europe followed, such as B. at the Force Attack Festival, where Talco had already earned a lot of attention.

On August 25, 2010 the album La Cretina Commedia was released - a concept album with 13 songs, which is dedicated to the left activist and mafia critic Giuseppe "Peppino" Impastato . The cover pays homage to the And out come the wolves of the band Rancid , as well as the first EP from Minor Threat - a reference to Talco's punk rock and hardcore roots. Musically, the record is characterized by a further refinement of the style and greater variety.

Since the release, the band has been live whenever the members' jobs allow. Because of this fact, in contrast to other bands, Talco often play many short tours or on weekends, but spread over the whole year. In the summer of 2011 they could be seen at over 20 festivals, including the Taubertal Festival , Open Flair and the Woodstock stop in Poland.

Talco's fifth album was released in November 2012. It's called "Gran Galà" and contains a total of 15 songs. Since the release of her album, Talco has given a total of 77 concerts from December 2012 to the end of 2013 across Europe and Russia. Germany is always a popular destination for Italians.

The sixth album, Silent Town , was released on November 6, 2015 with 12 songs on Destiny Records. A concert tour with 26 stops in Europe will follow in spring 2016, 9 of them in German-speaking countries.

Her sixth studio album, The Winner Isn't , was released on February 25, 2018, and reached the German charts for the first time at number 72.

style

The band plays clean, sometimes fast ska with some punk influences . The music is extremely danceable and very influenced by the band Ska-P and Italian folk music. The band members describe their music as Patchanka with origins and influences from bands like Mano Negra , Gogol Bordello but also influences from modern Balkan beats. In Italy they are also often referred to as "Combat Ska", although this term is not very common in Germany. It is mainly used there for bands like Banda Bassotti , RedSka or Talco, who are often faster, more political and more punk than many two-tone influenced ska bands .

The band knows how to arrange both fast and slow songs with a brass section that is not too intrusive. In addition to the usual line-up of guitars and wind instruments in Ska-Punk , a violin is also used for the first time on the Mazel Tov album , and in some songs an accordion-like sound effect is produced with the keyboard . The songs "Diari Perduti" from the album Combat Circus and Il Lamento del Mare on Mazel Tov were recorded together with the female voice of Federica Gozzo, a friend of the band with Argentine roots. The lyrics are completely written in Italian , but the band is keen that their lyrics are understood internationally, so the album booklets contain an English translation for each song. The lyrics are mostly about working-class life, many songs also contain a political statement, some works by Talco are addressed to the initiators of the Iraq war.

Talco have released seven albums so far: Tutti Assolti (2003), Combat Circus (2006), Mazel Tov (2008), La Cretina Commedia (2010), Gran Gala (2012), Silent Town (2015) and And the Winner Isn't (2018).
