Banda Bassotti (literally dachshunds , Italian translation of Die Panzerknacker ) is a left-wing, anti-fascist Italian ska-punk band from Rome .

history

Banda Bassotti was formed in 1987 from the anti-fascist craft collective La Banda Bassotti . In 1991 the debut album Figli della Stessa Rabbia was released . After the release of the albums Bella Ciao and Avanzo de Cantiere , the band split up in 1996 for the time being. Banda Bassotti was re-formed in 2001, and the band has released seven albums since then.

Style and attitude

Until the band split up, Banda Bassotti played mainly rock inspired by The Clash and The Specials with ska and reggae influences. After the re-establishment in 2001, the style became significantly more Ska-influenced, the line-up was expanded by four wind instruments. On the 2003 album Asi es mi vida , the band covered traditional songs of the labor movement and the struggle against Franquism .

On the back of their CDs is always the sentence Ama la musica - odia il fascismo , which translates as: "Love music - hate fascism". The band belongs to the anti-imperialist spectrum of the left movement. The band also takes a stand on the Israel-Palestine conflict and has a pro-Palestinian attitude.

meaning

In an interview, the Italian Redskin - Fanzine REDS called the band an "important reference point in the Redskin scene ". Banda Bassotti is also known in Spain and especially the Basque Country .

The band also enjoys cult status with the traditional left-wing fan scene of AS Livorno , which the band thanked with the album Baldi e Fieri , dedicated to the Brigate Autonome Livornesi . The band also performs regularly in Germany.

criticism

There is criticism of the band mainly because of the piece Nazi Sion Polizei ("Nazi Zionist Police") from the debut album Figli Della Stessa Rabbia , which says:

"A Dachau imparò - Come si fa
police, police - Nazi-sion police
Le SS sono - la scuola del Mossad
Pietre contro i fucili - Nella Palestina
Il coraggio contro - La viltà
No, non è finita - E non finirà
Fino a quando l 'ultimo - Sionista non se ne andrà
Police, police - Nazi-sion police
L'Intifada - Ti seppellirà ”

“In Dachau they learned - how to do it
police, police, Nazi Zionist police,
the SS is the school of the Mossad
stones against rifles - in Palestine
the courage against cowardice
no it is not over - and will never stop
until too the last Zionist disappeared
police, police, Nazi Zionist police,
the Intifada will be your grave "

- Banda Bassotti in the lyrics to Nazi Sion Polizei from the 1992 album Figli Della Stessa Rabbia .

The Antifa Frankfurt describes the song as "a song that is bursting with hatred of Israelis". On their website, the campaign wrote in summer 2003 "In addition to the death wish against Israelis, the equation of the Israeli security forces with the SS is particularly infamous" . When asked about the text, the band made it clear in an interview in 2004: “We are not anti-Semites.” As early as mid-2004, the band stated that they had not played the piece live since reunification “due to their changed perception of the Middle East conflict” .
