Gandhi Bilal Djuna [ gãdi bilɛl dʒuna ] (born May 6, 1986 in Kinshasa , Zaire ; known by his stage name Maître Gims [ mɛtʁə gims ] or just Gims ) is a Congolese rapper and singer . He is a member of the Sexion d'Assaut group .

biography

Gandhi Bilal Djuna was born in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and came to France at the age of three . He comes from a musical family, his father is Djuna Djanana, a singer in the Papa Wemba Band , his brother Dadju was a member of The Shin Sekai , the brothers Bedjik and Xgangs are also rappers.

Growing up in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris , he later moved to the 9th and finally the 19th arrondissement . He performed under the name Gims with his friends from Sexion d'Assaut . He studied communication and graphic design. In 2004 he converted from Christianity to Islam and took the middle name Bilal.

With his collective Sexion d'Assaut he recorded the title Coup 2 Pression in 2003 and at the same time worked with JR in the duo project Prototype 3015 . He decided to add Maître to his name and to use the pseudonym le Fléau ("The Curse"). After a few independent releases, Sexion d'Assaut met their current manager Dawala in the underground of Châtelet-Les Halles . Then they released a CD in 2005 under the name La Terre du Milieu ("Middle Earth"). Maître Gims drew the cover. In 2007 he also worked as a producer, wrote instrumental pieces and released his maxi CD Pour ceux qui dorment les yeux ouverts ("For those who sleep with their eyes open"). The Maxi featured pieces with Sexion d'Assaut, rapper Koma (by Scred Connexion ) and singer Carole. In the meantime, he and Sexion d'Assaut took part in two 12-inch 'all-star fights in the Salle du Batofar , a famous battle of the Parisian underground. After winning the second battle, he was considered one of the best French freestylers . In 2008 he recorded the album Le Renouveau ("The Renewal") with 3e Prototype and toured local festivals to increase his profile.

In 2011 Gims worked with his father Djuna Djanana on a new Djanana album. In 2012 the artist published the comic Au coeur du Vortex ("In the heart of the vortex"). In 2013 he released his first solo album Subliminal . It earned him widespread notoriety thanks to the singles J'me tire and Bella included on it . The second solo album was launched as a double album at the end of August 2016 . The first of the two CDs consists primarily of urban pop and pop, and the second the real origin of Gims, rap . He announced his third solo album on Snapchat in early November 2016 .

With the single Loin , he entered the German single charts for the first time in early 2017 and reached the top 10.

At the end of March 2018, after the release of several singles, his third album Ceinture Noire was released . It contains 40 songs and collaborations with MHD , his brother Dadju and Lil Wayne . After another edition with three additional songs, the end to be published April 2019 re-edition of Ceinture Noire, which Transcedance is.

In March 2018, he revealed that he had been denied French citizenship. According to reports in the press, the reason is his bigamy , which French law does not allow.

In spring 2019 he changed his former stage name Maître Gims to Gims.
