Sexion d'Assaut is a nine-member French hip-hop collective consisting of eight rappers and a DJ .
history
Sexion d'Assaut was formed in the early 2000s and consists mainly of young people from northeastern banlieues of the capital Paris. Sexion d'Assaut are under contract with the French label Wati B and have an exclusive distribution deal with the major record company Sony Music France. Alongside French urban acts like Booba and Soprano, the group is one of the best-known French rap groups. Your Facebook page has over 6 million fans, and your own YouTube channel has over 1 billion video visitors.
The group's first album was released in spring 2010 and reached number 2 on the French charts. Originally they were nominated for an MTV Europe Music Award in 2010 in the category Best European Act France , but after controversial statements by the rappers they were taken out of the vote prematurely by the music broadcaster because of an “open call to intolerance”.
Sexion d'Assaut had their breakthrough in Germany with their hit single "Désolé", which ran on all TV and radio stations on heavy rotation and made it into the top 20 of the German single charts. In September 2011 the band toured with their Paris Va Bien Tour 2011 through Germany, Austria and Switzerland , promoted by Bodensee Records .
At the MTV Europe Music Awards 2012 in Frankfurt am Main they were nominated again for an MTV Award in the category Best European Act France . In the same year they received the Kora All African Music Award in the European Diaspora category .
Her second album L'Apogée was awarded a diamond record in October 2012 for over 500,000 units sold in France . In August 2016, the album was awarded another diamond record with 1,000,000 units sold .
They appeared as a featuring on a track in member Lefa's first solo album .
Band name and members
The band name Sexion d'Assaut is a homophone to "Sections d'Assaut", the French term for the NS - Sturmabteilung (SA), which sparked controversial discussions.
Originally over 20 rappers from Paris and the surrounding area were part of the rap collective Sexion d'Assaut. Now only the core is left, eight rappers and one DJ:
Maître Gims , Lefa, Doomams (aka l'Insomniaque), Black Mesrimes (aka Black M ), Adams Diallo (or Barack Adama), Maska, JR O Crom, LIO (aka Pétrodollars) and DJ HCUE.
Homophobia
Sexion d'Assaut have been criticized in France for their homophobia . In the magazine "International Hip Hop" from June 2010 Lefa says: "We are 100 percent against homosexuality and we stand by it."
In the song On t'a humilié , Maître Gims sings: "I think it is high time the gays died, cut off their penis, let them die, found on the périphérique ". After the statement by rapper Lefa, all of Sexion d'Assaut's videos were no longer broadcast on French TV and radio stations also refused to play their songs. Their sold out first major tour in France had to be canceled as most of the French Zéniths are publicly funded.
On March 18, 2011, Sexion d'Assaut published: "Communique de Sexion d'Assaut" a ten-page document with an opinion on the homophobic statements. They started a big "apology campaign". Lefa's statements at the press conference were wrong. He apologized for that. The Maître Gims song was many years old. It is a demo song that should only exercise provocation, which is quite common in rap. Sexion d'Assaut wrote to YouTube in the USA with the request to completely delete three songs that contain homophobic statements. They also stopped their mixtape with the said song by Maître Gims, which was distributed by Because Music in France. The group met with some representatives of the French gay movement to apologize. Sexion d'Assaut also took part in panel discussions on the subject of “Human dignity and discrimination against sexual minorities” in universities, schools and associations.
