TCA the Microphone Mafia or TCA Microphone Mafia , later only Microphone Mafia , is an early German-Turkish-Italian rap group that formed in Cologne in 1989. TCA originally consisted of four school friends.

history

Microphone Mafia was founded in 1989 as TCA the Microphone Mafia by four school friends in Cologne-Flittard . At times the band also consisted of six members, but beatboxer Önder, producer Pierro and the first DJ Arni stopped shortly afterwards. TCA stood for " Therapy Contra Animosity " (therapy against hostility). The name was influenced by founding member Dennis "Dio" Morel, who had just spent time in the United States and was influenced by the NWA . The band first started rapping in English. She organized parties and jams in and around Cologne.

In 1991 the band presented itself for the first time in the classic line-up with the three rappers Dennis "Dio" Morel, Kutlu "Little Asia" Yurtseven and "Segnore" Rossi Pennino. The main feature of the group at the beginning was the simultaneous use of German , Italian , Neapolitan , Turkish and English . In 1991 she also made her first big appearance at the We Are Family Jam, presented by the city magazine StadtRevue , in which Rude Poets , Advanced Chemistry from Heidelberg and Die Coolen Säue (then under the name Cologne Rap Association) from Cologne also took part.

In 1992, under the impression of the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen , the band, whose members mainly come from guest worker families, became increasingly politicized . In 1993 she took part in the double album Hip Hop Hurra! Rap against right from the city magazine Prinz , which wanted to set an example against the increasing shift to the right. In the same year they were also on SOS Germany! Stop fascism! Stop racism! Represented by the Day-Glo Records label , there together with the Turkish rapper Bülent Eskimez .

In 1994 TCA the Microphone Mafia released the first two singles No! and hand in hand with Sony Music . The latter emerged from an initiative of the media against racism association , which asked the band to publish an anti-racist television clip. This was shown on German-speaking television. In 1995, Hand in Hand became the title track of a compilation by Sony Music, which included Die Fantastischen Vier , Fettes Brot and Advanced Chemistry, among others . However, the clip produced for this was not shown on VIVA . Shortly afterwards, their A&R manager left Sony and the band was also released from their contract.

In 1996 their first album Vendetta (1996) was released via Day-Glo Records (distributed by SPV ). The album, which contained music in three languages, was also sold in Turkey, where it was released on cassette and CD via ADA Müzik, with a significantly higher proportion of Turkish.

The first single from the album Vendetta Say What was not played on the radio, despite media interest in the intercultural aspect of the band. The German music broadcaster VIVA showed little interest in this project this time as well: The video for the song, shot in Istanbul, was only played twice.

After the failure of the first album, the group switched to only working in German. The band managed to find accommodation with chloedwig , a subsidiary of BMG , where their second album Microphonia was released, which now refers less to multiculturalism and more to orchestral arrangements and heavier lyrics.

Kutlu Yurtseven (2018)

The first single was The Color of Money , which relates to the CDU donation affair. Things are not going well for the group at BMG either and this single is neither played on the radio nor on music television.

Eventually the band began to found their own label: Al Dente Recordz, based in Cologne. The label works closely with Pirate Records. The sampler Buon Appetito was first published in 2001 . A posse cut was recorded as the title song together with many friends.

In the meantime, the group has released several albums and maxi singles as Microphone Mafia and, together with BAP, also published a maxi against right-wing radicalism under the title Arsch huh, Zäng ussenander! (ie: ass up, teeth apart), which was reported nationwide. At the first "ass huh, Zäng ussenande" concert still in the audience, they were among the founding members of the ass huh AG and participated in 2002 in the new edition for the tenth anniversary, where they jeit When d'r sky ram-op of the Höhner coverten .

After the album Infernalia Morel got out. Then Önder Bardakci, Yurtseven and Pennino continued as a trio. The crew album La Resistance was also released via Al Dente Recordz , with the title serving as both a Crewname and an album name. The project consists of the members of Anarchist Academy , Callya, Meditias, Microphone Mafia, Lotta C and Chaoze One .

Cooperation with Esther Bejarano

In 2007 Kutlu Yurtseven got in touch with Holocaust survivor Esther Bejarano to start a musical project together. The background was the schoolyard CD project of the Free Comradeships and the NPD , in which free CDs with right-wing music were distributed in schoolyards. As part of the campaign smarter instead of right , the youth workers' associations DGB-Jugend NRW, Sozialistische Jugend Deutschlands - Die Falken NRW, the state youth organization AWO NRW and the Naturfreundejugend NRW wanted to set a multimedia CD against it.

The first joint rehearsals are successful and Bejarano's children Edna Bejarano , former singer of the band Rattles and Joram Bejarano quickly decide to take part in the project. Both played anti-fascist songs with their mother in the band Coincidence. The five members took songs from both bands as well as songs from the labor movement such as Bella Ciao , but also the ballad by the Jewish whore Marie Sanders ( Bertolt Brecht ) and Jewish folk songs and revised them with contemporary texts. The first part of their collaboration appeared on the Anti-Schulhof CD Musik as a mouthpiece , which could be ordered free of charge.

In 2009 the album Per la Vita was released on Mad Butcher Records and Al-Dente Recordz, which contained eleven songs. Afterwards the band will play more than 170 concerts with different line-ups. The performances are divided into two parts: first Esther Bejarano reads part of her biography, then the musicians enter the stage and the hip-hop part begins.

In 2013 the collaboration with La Vita Continua will be continued. However, Edna Bejarano and Önder Bardakci no longer took part in the album, which contained 12 songs plus a live bonus track. On the subsequent tour Rossi Pennino was no longer involved, who works as a cook and no longer had the necessary time.

In 2017 the group traveled to Cuba. An illustrated book documented the concert tour.
