The Naturfreundejugend Deutschlands (NFJD) is the independent children and youth association of NaturFreunde Deutschlands e. V. and internationally at the International Young Nature Friends (ger .: International Young Nature Friends , shortly IYNF ) organized.

The Naturfreundejugend is involved in the areas and on the topics of the environment and sustainability , democracy and participation, as well as sustainable travel, international youth encounters and sport. In addition, the NFJD is clearly left-wing political and campaigns for equality, against right-wing extremism and for environmental protection. The NFJD participates in various alliances and demonstrations.

According to their mission statement from 2007, which is divided into the five areas “Solidarity”, “Sustainability”, “Democracy and Co-Determination”, “Education” and “Fun and Experience”, the Naturfreundejugend strives for a democratization of all areas of life and the overcoming of capitalism . This includes the fight against nuclear power plants (since the 1970s), against the destruction of the tropical rainforest (since the 1980s) or against cheap air fares (since the 1990s). International understanding and tolerance are two other principles. The aim is to move towards a “socialist democracy in the sense of a humanistic, liberal and democratic social order”.

history

“To give working people from gray cities access to nature” was the goal of the founding generation of the Friends of Nature movement in Austria over 100 years ago . In 1895 they joined forces to explore nature and to fight for the right of free access to nature for all. An alternative to the Alpine Club should be created. This is what the class-fighting greeting "Berg frei!" From the beginning, the Friends of Nature combined leisure activities with socio-political demands. B. after the eight-hour working day and equal living and working conditions.

The Naturefriends Youth was founded in 1926 as a counterbalance to civil education. In addition to the confrontation with the growing National Socialism , the work of the Naturefriends Youth was shaped by the protest against the Reich Labor Service , which unemployed young people were forced to do , as well as the demand for the separation of state and church . That is why the Friends of Nature were banned in the early years of the Third Reich . This was accompanied by the seizure of over 300 Naturefriends houses and the imprisonment of numerous members of the association.

Immediately after the unconditional surrender in 1945, regional associations of nature lovers were founded. For the West German nature lovers, the consequence of National Socialism was a strictly anti-militarist position. In East Germany , the remnants of the hiking and tourism association of nature lovers were subordinated to the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB).

Since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany , parts of the Naturefriends Youth have demonstrated against rearming , joining NATO and the reintroduction of conscription . The Naturfreundejugend took part in the dispute over the nuclear armament of the Bundeswehr and played an important role in supporting the foreign legionnaires ' repatriation service , headed by Si Mustapha-Müller , whose task it was to call foreign legionaries to desert during the Algerian War of Independence and to bring them back to their home countries . With the campaign “Emergency of Democracy”, the Naturefriends youth mobilized against the emergency laws of the federal government.

In 1961, the Federal Youth Conference decided to take part in the Easter marches . The federal youth leader Herbert Faller (from 1975 to 1981 federal chairman of NaturFreunde) was a founding member of the central committee of the Easter March and Klaus Vack (who later became federal cultural advisor) was secretary of the Easter marches and worked for many years in an office community in Offenbach together with the Hessian nature lovers youth.

At the end of the 1960s, parts of the anti-authoritarian youth movement and the student movement were part of the Naturefriends Youth, because they saw in it an undogmatic hybrid of the classic youth association and the extra-parliamentary opposition (APO).

In the 1980s, the Naturefriends Youth participated in the peace movement and supported the call to boycott the 1987 census . In the 1990s there was a demonstration against the amendment of the asylum rights article .

With the “ youth center movement ” in the eighties, anti-authoritarian concepts also influenced the leisure activities of the nature lovers.

In their statutes and in their guidelines, the Naturefriends Youth are committed to democracy and socialism . What socialism means for the association has changed again and again in the course of the association's history. The focus remains unchanged, however, on the core points of justice and solidarity , the demands for a decent life and work for all people and the commitment to environmentally and socially compatible production and economic methods.

The association participates in youth and socio-political activities or initiates them itself, such as the children's summit that takes place every two years . She is a founding member of the German Federal Youth Association and works with the German Nature Conservation Association (DNR).

In accordance with their guidelines, the members determine their own work in their own organs and in all parts of the association. The "Kinder- und Jugendwerk der Naturfreunde - Association for the Promotion of Friends of Nature Germany eV" acts as legal entity and sponsoring association.

Structure of the association

The Naturefriends Youth has a federal structure. Decisions are made according to the majority and delegation principle. There are four levels: the local groups, the district level, the state level and the federal level. The individual associations at all levels have their own board, which is elected by the level below. At the federal level, the Naturfreundejugend has been led by a gender-parity dual leadership since 2011, which is supported by other members of the federal management. From 2013 to 2017 there were also three advisory boards (“Democracy and Co-determination”, “Environment and Sustainability” and “Travel and Sport”). These were led by a specially elected member of the federal management team. These advisory boards were abolished at the 2017 federal conference in Weimar.

Leisure time

The association offers socio-pedagogically supervised trips for children, young people and young adults up to the age of 27 through the individual regional associations . These are limited to Germany and other European countries. In all trips, value is placed on the participants to organize their leisure time independently .

In the context of international understanding , individual regional associations maintain contact with international partner organizations.

Children's summit

The Children's Summit (KIGI) is a large nationwide meeting for children and young people between 12 and 15 years of age, which is organized every two years by the Friends of Nature Germany under the motto "Children talk - adults listen". At the children's summit, the participants develop demands and self-commitments . They summarize these in a future contract and discuss them with politicians.

The first children's summit took place in 1991 in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt . Further stations were Hanover (2000), Bonn (2001), Neumünster (2002), Dortmund (2004) and Duisburg (2006). In 2008 the children's summit on the subject of biological diversity took place again in Bonn, 2010 under the motto “One world. A future. Our chance. Wir fairänder! ”In Marburg and 2012 under the premise“ One for all, all against one - Tatort DisKRIMInierung ”in Nuremberg . In 2014, the children's summit for the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child took place in Berlin from November 15th to 17th in cooperation with the German Children's Fund and Terre des hommes . In 2016 the motto of the children's summit was “What do you think when you think of Africa”. After 25 years it took place again in Frankfurt.
