The Giannis D was a bulk carrier sailing under the flag of Greece , which ran onto a reef on April 19, 1983 in the Red Sea , near Abu Nuhas off the coast of Egypt , and sank. The ship is now a popular diving destination that can be easily reached by boat from Hurghada and el-Guna .

Details of the ship

The 99.5 meter long and 16 meter wide ship was launched in September 1969 at the shipyard Kuryshima Dock Company of Imabari , Japan , as Shoyo Maru from the stack . A six cylinder machine from Akasaka Tekkosho KK Yaizu , Japan, with 2,200 kW provided the propulsion . The ship had two holds and three loading cranes. In 1975 it was sold to a Greek shipping company and went under the name Markos . In 1980 it was sold to the Dumarc Shipping and Trading Corporation, based in Piraeus , Greece, and renamed Giannis D , where the D stands for the name of the shipping company. The D can still be seen on the chimney.

Ship accident in April 1983

The ship had an accident on April 19, 1983 on the reef of Abu Nuhas in the Red Sea, off the Egyptian coast near Hurghada in the governorate of al-Bahr al-ahmar . It was on the way from Rijeka in present-day Croatia via Jeddah in Saudi Arabia to al-Hudaida in Yemen with a load of wood on board. On April 19, 1983, the ship was coming from the Suez Canal in the Strait of Gubal , a fairly narrow fairway before reaching the open waters of the Red Sea. Due to a navigation error it deviated from the planned course and rammed the reef of Abu Nuhas at full speed. The ship remained badly damaged on the reef roof, the crew was able to escape to the nearby island of Shadwan . The wreck was tied to the reef with lines and partly removed until it finally broke up in a storm and sank. Today, it is up to the northwest corner of the reef in about 25 meters of water depth at position 27 ° 34 '42 "  N , 33 ° 55' 24"  O coordinates: 27 ° 34 '42 "  N , 33 ° 55' 24"  O .

Diving area

The Giannis D is broken in three parts directly on the reef of Abu Nuhas at a depth between 5 and 24 meters. The bow and stern are relatively well preserved, while the middle section is completely destroyed. The ship is moderately overgrown and easily accessible for divers . Some of the interior spaces (bridge and engine room) are also easily accessible. Distinctive points of the wreck are the stern with propeller , rudder and the relatively intact, but completely empty bridge, lying at an angle of about 45 ° on the backboard side . The bow is right on the reef. The bow mast and anchor winch are particularly well preserved. The bow section is also on the port side. The wreck is overgrown with hard and soft corals and provides a habitat for many reef fish. In the immediate vicinity there are other wrecks on the reef, some of which are, however, in greater water depths. The Chrisoula K is about 400 meters from the Giannis D and is also easy to dive.
