The three-cushion world championship for juniors in 2013 was a tournament in the three- cushion carom discipline and took place from October 3rd to 6th in Corinth , Greece .

Tournament commentary

16 players were admitted to the World Cup. Germany, Austria and Switzerland were not represented due to a lack of young talent. The defending champion Kim Haeng-jik was no longer allowed to participate for reasons of age. With four wins (2007, 2010–2012) he is the record winner of the Junior World Championships and it will be accordingly difficult for his successor to follow in his “not too small footsteps”. The favorite was the vice world and European champion Ömer Karakurt (born 1992) from Turkey. He traveled to the neighboring country with his younger brother Berkay . Ömer says about him: "He has even more talent than me."

Group stage

As it is already becoming apparent with the seniors, the Asians, in particular the Koreans, are about to break the European dominance in this game. Cho Myung-woo , who was only 15 years old, won his opening game in just 12 shots and a general average (GD) of 2.083. Opponent was the Greek hopefuls and wildcard player Dimitrios Seleventas. The only 11-year-old boy had no chance against Cho and could only score four points (GD 0.333). The South Americans Christian Sanchez (Colombia), Pedro Reyes (Ecuador) and the 2013 CPB champion, Jose Garcia, also from Colombia, were also able to win their opening games. Sanchez, not related to the Spanish player Daniel Sánchez , even won both games on matchday one. His participation in the final round was almost certain. In the end, three players in this group were tied, so the GD decided who went through. Sanchez had the worst average and ended up in third place. On the other hand, the Korean Jung Hae-chang and Adrien Tachoire from France came next .

Finals

Quarter finals

Cho also made it to the finals, clearly defeating the French with 35:21 and was in the semi-finals of the tournament, as was his compatriot Jung, who also clearly beat the Spaniard Sergio Aparicio with 35:16. In an exciting duel between the European junior champion from Turkey and the Pan American junior champion from Colombia, the latter pulled away with 15 points in the first three shots. Karakurt caught up, equalized and was then in the lead with 30:29 when Garcia was able to turn the game around and knocked out the game with a series of 6 and in the end won with 30:35. Karakurt was thus denied the last chance for a world championship title among the juniors, as he was no longer allowed to compete in the following year due to age.

Semifinals

For the first time in the history of this World Cup (including the previous tournament) no European made it to the semi-finals. It was a continental duel between Korea and South America. With Colombia and Ecuador, two American players made it to the semi-finals, also for the first time. A Korean duo had already existed in 2011 with the eventual winner Kim Haeng-jik and Kim Jun-tae.

The first game between the Equadorian Reyes and Jung from Korea went clearly to the Asians at 17:35. The second encounter was more balanced and turned out to be a "head-to-head race" between the second Korean semi-finalist Cho and the Colombian Garcia. The latter was in the lead in the end and just won 35:32, as Cho failed to score a point in the second push.

final

A novelty in 2013 was the participation of an American player in the final. In 2003, the Venezuelan Merlin Romero was the first player from this continent in the semi-finals, but failed there. For the fourth time in a row, and for the fifth time in total, a Korean was again in the final. The Asian was also able to prevail in the last three tournaments.

As it became apparent in the course of the tournament, a strong playing José Garcia clearly prevailed against the Korean with 35:17. He had already shown nerve and playing strength in the various phases of the tournament. He is the first American to win this tournament. After winning the Pan American Championship, the world championship title went to him and to Colombia.
