The three-cushion European junior championship was first held in 1971 and since 1992 regularly in the three- cushion pile-up variant . It usually takes place once a year. It is organized by the European carom billiards association CEB ( Confédération Européenne de Billard ).

History

First efforts an international resp. Organizing a European tournament for juniors goes back to the former President of the German Billiards Association (DBB), Karlheinz Krienen. On his initiative, the predecessor institution of the CEB, the Fédération Internationale de Billard (FIB), decided to organize a duel tournament for the 1956/57 season with the disciplines Free Game and Cadre 47/2 . It primarily served to promote young people and at that time did not have the status of a European championship. All juniors under the age of 23 who had already participated in international tournaments such as world and European championships were excluded. In 1967 these restrictions were abolished, the age limit was lowered to 21 years and the tournament was named Junior European Championship.

Krienen's commitment had an impact both internationally and on a national, i.e. association, level. Various junior championships were introduced at the national and international level after 1965. The duel EM continued until 1977 and then dissolved into two individual EM. It wasn't until 30 years later, in 2007 and 2008, that European championships were held again.

The three-cushion discipline , which has become increasingly popular, received the first European Junior Championship in 1971. However, some officials were of the opinion that it would be harmful for young players to start with three cushion without the classic training in the free game and cadre . The Netherlands and Belgium therefore did not send any players. This attitude led to the fact that for more than 20 years (1971-1992) no three-band EM was organized. After 1992, however, 2007 was the only year in which no European Championship was held.

Tournament mode

The first European Championship in 1971 was played with a small field of eight players, in 1992 there were 20 and since 1993 until today 16 players have participated. In 1971 the game was played “everyone against everyone” for 40 points, but the set system (2 winning sets each 15 points) was introduced at the second European Championship in 1992. In 2012 the group phase was played at a distance of 25/50 (25 points or 50 shots) and the knockout phase at 30/50.

Up until 2001, 3rd place was played in the "small final"; since 2002 there have been two third-place finals without a "small final".
