Viennese Billiards Association AustriaAustria

Heinrich Weingartner (born December 13, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian carambola player and former president of the Austrian billiards association BSVÖ . Currently (as of 2014) he works as an archivist, publisher, author and editor of the trade journal "billard". He also runs a billiard museum and a billiard school. He is chairman and founding member of the Vienna Billiards Association (WBA), one of the largest carom clubs in Europe.

Life

His parents Heinrich and Rosa worked in the Viennese Café Niebauer in Vienna-Leopoldstadt, where their son often stayed. It was common for billiard tables to be set up in such cafes. They did not correspond to the official sizes, but were slightly smaller (playing area 95 × 190 cm). Hardly noticed by adults, Heinrich turned to billiards as a boy around 1950. He often did his homework in the café and always looked for a table right in front of the billiards. So he was able to watch the players who were good from his point of view.

At the age of 14, his father regularly took him to various billiard coffeehouses. Both found the game material found to be mostly bad and neglected. That is why they joined the billiards club Wiedner Billardfreunde in Café Kolschitzky on May 1st, 1954 . Josef Pipal, a well-known professional player and coach of the club at the time, recognized the talent of young Heinrich and trained him for free. 1956 followed the change to the renowned Billard Sportklub Union (BSK Union) in Vienna-Neubau. Weingartner won the European Cup on June 20, 1965 with the BSK team.

Weingartner won a total of 15 Austrian individual national championship titles and has been active in various functions at the BSVÖ since 1960. In the course of his life he founded no fewer than 20 billiards clubs, the first in 1957 at the age of 17. He still runs a typical Viennese billiard café near the Westbahnhof.

His commercial training helped him start a pool and adult games trade at the age of 24. That was in 1964, and at that time it was the only one of its kind in the country. He continues to train regularly and still takes part in tournaments. He often travels several times a year as a spectator (previously also as a participant) to international events. He is married to Maria and their son is also named Heinrich (* 1970). Both work in the family business : while Maria takes care of the business, Heinrich jun. around with the ubiquitous authorities. Heinrich sen. after all, is responsible for technical and organizational matters.

Business start-ups

On December 9, 1964, Weingartner opened a specialist shop for billiards. In 1969 he founded his own billiard café and in 1978 his own billiard table manufacture. In his billiard school lessons are given in the game of billiards.

Trade journal "billard"

In 1966 he founded his own publishing house. Since 1988 he has been the publisher of the specialist magazine “billard” there. She appears i. A. ten times a year, in December 2012 the 250th edition was published. In 1990 the association newspaper " Carambol " of the BSVÖ merged with "Billard", since then it has been the official organ of the BSVÖ.

Billiard Museum

The museum was founded in 1992 in Vienna. It is probably the largest of its kind in the world, only the private Norman Clare Collection in Thurston, Liverpool can be compared to it. However, there they concentrate on snooker and English billiards .

The collection includes 11 antique pool tables, more than 7,000 unique items, 100,000 photos of players, 2,000 posters and 850 books, the oldest of which was published in 1654.

An archive on billiards history is attached to the museum, which he runs together with the German archivist Dieter Haase . In 2001 Haase compiled the world's most extensive bibliography on billiards. It is an indispensable reference work for libraries, archives and collectors. The second edition is in preparation.

Offices and honors

In 2005 Heinrich Weingartner was president of the Austrian billiards association BSVÖ. In 2011 he was vice president of the association.

Currently (as of November 2012) Weingartner is foreign secretary and press officer of the BSVÖ, of which he is also an honorary member.
