The 5-cone billiards world championship is a tournament that is played in the carom variant of cone billiards .

history

The first world championship in 5-cone billiards (also 5-pins (English), cinque Birilli / Stecca (Italian) or 5-quillas (Spanish)) took place in Santa Fe , Argentina in 1965 . With a few exceptions, the World Cup is held every two years. The leading nation is Italy with fourteen titles, followed by Argentina with nine and Uruguay with one. So far, the World Championships have been held almost exclusively in Argentina and Italy, the main area of distribution of this discipline, and once each in Switzerland (1989) and Spain (2006).

Until the 1980s, players played at a table with pockets and two large and one small ivory ball, before switching to the now known version of the carom table in 1983. The rules of the game of the Italian Billiards Association (FIBiS) are now considered a quasi-standard and are also recognized by the UMB world association.

Game mode and statutes

The regulations change regularly because i. A. is adapted to the upcoming event. The aim is to have the tournament take place every two years. Most recently (2019) the game was played with 64 participants from Wednesday to Sunday.

Attendees

Of the 64 participants, 8 each were determined in two qualifying rounds in Argentina and Italy, the other 48 could be nominated as follows:

  • 1 defending champion
  • 1 wildcard from the world association
  • 1 wildcard from the organizing association
  • 32 CEB deployments
  • 11 Postings of the CPB
  • 1 Deployment of the ACC
  • 1 Deployment of the ACBC

Group stage and final round

Everyone plays against everyone in the group stage. The size of the group depends on the number of participants: There are eight groups of eight, six or four players each (with 64, 48 or 32 participants). With 32 participants, the first two, with 48 or 64 participants, the first four of each group move into the final round, which is then played according to the knockout system. In the group phase, the game is played on "Best of 5" (60 points per set), then on "Best of 7".

fees

The following fees apply:

  • Organizing association: € 3600
  • Participants: € 200

Prize money

In 2019, each of the 64 participants received prize money of at least 350 euros (for those who were eliminated after the group games) up to a maximum of 6000 euros (for the winner). A total of 36,500 euros in prize money was distributed. All amounts are gross, with 30% tax deducted.
