Necochea is a city in eastern Argentina and the capital of the Partido Necochea of the same name . It is located in the south of the province of Buenos Aires on the Atlantic coast and is both a port city and an important seaside resort. The population is 89,096 (2001, INDEC ).
location
The city is located at the mouth of the Quequén Grande River in the Atlantic . The surrounding area belongs to the pampas and is used for agriculture. Necochea has a temperate and relatively windy climate, with warm summers and mild winters and rainfall all year round.
The city consists of two parts: the actual Necochea west of the Río Quequén Grande, and the formerly independent Quequén east of the river, which is now incorporated into the city.
history
The origin of the city lies in a small fishing port that was built in 1870. The actual city was founded in 1881 by Angel Murga . Right from the start, attempts were made to build an export port on the Río Quequén Grande. This project was only crowned with success in 1911, as a railway connection to the port of Quequén was only built in that year. In the 1930s, the bathing center was built west of the city, which in the following decades developed into the second most important tourist center after Mar del Plata . In the 1970s, the bathing center was completely renovated, including a casino, a beach promenade and several high-rise buildings.
Worth seeing
The city has no significant architectural landmarks. The biggest attraction is the Parque Miguel Lillo , a pine forest west of the resort's bathing center, which was largely created close to nature. In terms of nature, in addition to the beaches near the bathing center and the beaches of Quequén, which is adorned by a huge shipwreck, the beach of Las Grutas five kilometers west of the bathing center is attractive.
economy
Necochea's economy is shaped by the service sector. Despite the two industrial parks, industry only plays a subordinate role; the port and tourism , which have been the city's main source of income since the 1970s , are more important . Around 700,000 tourists visit the city each season.
