Gustavo Enrique Torregiani (born April 7, 1962 in Leones ) is an Argentine bowling pool player and three-time world champion in the five-cone billiard variant.
Private
Gustavo's enthusiasm for the game of billiards began in the 1970s when he was around 10 years old. His father Emilio was a good bocce player and little Gustavo was only too happy to accompany him to his games. Since Gustavo was a very lively child and his father disturbed his concentration, the latter gave him to the neighboring café, which had a pool table. He now spent most of the day in this café learning to play pool. He played carelessly like children do, and no one could imagine then how far he would one day make it. In 1975 he started playing the more professional game at a club in the suburbs. In 1978 the family moved to the center and he switched to the “Club Leones”, to which he has remained loyal to this day.
Career
1970 / 80s
In 1979 he played his first official tournament, the 5-pin team championship, at that time people still played at tables with bags. His teammate and friend at the time was Alfredo Giraldo , a great player from whom Gustavo learned a lot. On this debut, the two won the silver medal. From 1981 to 1984 he was regional champion, with the exception of 1982 when his friend Giraldo won. In the meantime people are starting to talk about the “Club Leones” as well as about the fantastic achievements of Gustavo Torregiani. During these years his reputation in the billiards world grows and the definitive confirmation of this comes in 1985 with his World Championship qualification. Here Gustavo achieved the 7th place; Giampiero Rosanna won the cup at this tournament , but he lost the only game to Gustavo of all people. At this point he had an impressive streak of wins in Argentina when his career took a damper. In 1987, when qualifying for the World Cup in Milan, he was defeated by the two-time world champion Nestor "Nene" Gomez, who then went to Italy in his place, but was defeated by the Italian Carlo Cifalá in the final. What he failed to do in 1987, he did in 1989 in Chiasso, Switzerland . There he beat Riccardo Belluta in the semifinals and then Giorgio Colombo , both Italy, in the final . After the World Cup, his club bought a carom table based on the Italian model, without holes, and he began hard training to understand and learn the secrets of carom (tables without holes offer a greater variety of carom possibilities, especially in the corner area!) .
Since 1990
In July 1990 Torregiani took part in the "Intercontinental Cup" between Italy and Argentina and won it. In the same year he received an award as the player with the most wins. In October he can win his second World Cup in Brescia . At the following eight world championships, however, the Italians were unbeatable. It was only at the last World Cup in 2009 that Torregiani was able to break the southern Europeans' winning streak and take home his third title.
In 1991 he moved to Italy, to Rezzato , and won several tournaments there at national level. In 2002 and 2003 he won the 9-pin billiards (Italian: Goriziani) Grand Prix in Saint-Vincent, northern Italy . Around 1,800 players take part in this tournament and it is compared to a World Cup. In 2012 another trophy was added with the Walter Nicoletti tournament in Uruguay . He is one of the most successful 5 and 9 pin billiards players in Argentina. Torregiani is president of the Argentine umbrella organization Federación Argentina de Aficionados al Billar (FAAB).
