Horst aan de Maas ( Limburgish Haors aan de Maas ) is a municipality in the Netherlands , province of Limburg . It has a total area of ​​191.92 km². On January 31, 2019, the community had 42,336 inhabitants.

Horst aan de Maas , which emerged in 2001 from the merger of three smaller municipalities, consists of the main town of Horst, where the municipal administration is also based, and nine other villages: America , Broekhuizen, Broekhuizervorst, Griendtsveen, Grubbenvorst, Hegelsom, Lottum, Melderslo and meters. Since January 1, 2010, the previous municipality of Sevenum (localities Sevenum, Kronenberg and Evertsoord) and the localities of Meerlo, Swolgen and Tienray of the previous municipality of Meerlo-Wanssum have also belonged to the municipality.

Location and economy

The municipality is located immediately south of Venray , and 10 km northwest of Venlo . The A73 Nijmegen –Venlo motorway runs right through the municipality. A little south of Horst is the small station Horst-Sevenum on the very much used railway line Venlo - Eindhoven .

Although Horst some industrial companies, u. a. owns a John Deere agricultural machinery and tractor factory , horticulture and agriculture are the major economic drivers. Each village has its specialty: Lottum has rose nurseries, asparagus is grown in Grubbenvorst (there is also a trading center with an auction hall for this) and mushrooms are grown in Horst and you can learn this trade in a special technical school. There are also pig fattening houses, tree nurseries, etc.

Tourism is also not insignificant, because Horst has several campsites and two parks belonging to the Center Parcs group (Het Meerdal and Park Loohorst), which are located next to each other in the hamlet of America.

history

The place Horst was first documented in 1219 under a different name. A castle built by local gentlemen stood there between around 1300 and 1840. The community, which always lived from agriculture, belonged to the Duchy of Geldern in the 15th century . Almost each of the villages had at times a certain independence under its own master who had his own castle. The many castle ruins still bear witness to this.

The second half of the 19th century brought the railway connection (1866) and the high-yield peat extraction in the moorland "De Peel". During the Second World War there was severe damage due to the proximity of the Peel-Raam position (see also Venray ). The famous Gothic church of Horst was bombed on October 12, 1944; the church treasures were preserved, as they had been hidden elsewhere in time, and were put up again in the new building in 1953.

Attractions

• There is a small museum in Horst.
• The many natural areas (De Peel, Schuytwater, wooded areas by the banks of the Maas) and picturesque castle ruins make the community a popular destination for hikers and cyclists.
