Hubert Jozef (“Hub”) van Doorne (born January 1, 1900 in America , Horst aan de Maas ; † May 23, 1979 in Deurne , Netherlands ) was the founder of Van Doorne's Aanhangwagenfabriek , later Van Doorne's Automobielfabriek ( DAF (Automobile) ) and inventor of the Variomatic .

biography

He was the eldest son of the village blacksmith Martinus van Doorne (1870–1912) and Petronella Vervoort (1866–1952). His younger brother was Wilhelmus Antonius Vincentius ("Wim") van Doorne (July 19, 1906 - May 3, 1978).

After the First World War , he first worked for a doctor as a chauffeur and fitter. In the mid-1920s he was a foreman at Sjef Mandiger's machine factory in Eindhoven , where he met Mr. Huenges, the director and owner of the Coolen brewery and ice cream factory. His Stearns-Knight automobile with rotary valve motor could apparently only be repaired by Hub van Doorne. Huenges was so impressed by Hub van Doornes' technical knowledge that he offered him help setting up his own business. On April 1, 1928, Huenges provided NLG 10,000 and Hub founded the construction company Machinefabriek en Reparatieinrichting Hub van Doorne on the premises of the brewery with 4 employees who carried out work for inland shipping and produced railings and bicycle racks for Philips. A year later he already employed 32 people and his brother Wim got into the business. The crisis in the 1930s forced them to look for new tasks and they decided to build trailers in 1933. With his technician Baghuis, he dared to do the new electric welding of load-bearing parts. Her light follower piqued interest. In 1935 they already employed 100 people.

In 1936 Huenges got out. From then on, Hub and Wim van Doorne produced the DAF container trailer for the transport of railway containers as Van Doorne's Aanhangwagenfabriek NV . During the Second World War , they developed prototypes of trucks. Since there was a great need for transportation when the Netherlands was rebuilt, they also started developing buses and cars. The factory on Geldropseweg was started for the production of truck chassis, where the DAF factories are still located.
