Location of America in the municipality of Horst aan de Maas |
America is a village in the north of the Dutch province of Limburg and is one of the ten villages in the municipality of Horst aan de Maas . The municipality of Horst aan de Maas is one of the larger in the province of Limburg in terms of area and is located between the city centers of Venlo and Venray . America is on the Venlo – Eindhoven railway line and used to have its own station.
General
America has kept its agricultural character to this day. In addition to the agricultural businesses, the tourism sector in particular is growing strongly, including the Park de Peelbergen holiday area . Outside the built-up center of America are two large Center Parcs , Het Meerdal and Limburgse Peel . America is also known through the band Rowwen Hèze , who sings in the Limburg language. In January 2018, the village had around 2,040 residents in 827 apartments.
designation
The origin of the place name is unclear, but probably refers to the continent of America . Heathland that has been reclaimed relatively recently in the Netherlands occasionally bears a toponym that probably indicates the remoteness of the place (e.g. Californië or Siberië ). A derivation from the German “am Erika ” should in any case represent a case of folk etymology .
Known residents
- Hub van Doorne (1900–1979), founder of DAF (Automobile) and inventor of the Variomatic
