GAU-7

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ford-Philco GAU-7 / A was one of the USAF in the late 1960s initiated, but a failed program to a new machine gun to replace the M61 Vulcan for the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle to develop.

The GAU-7 / A was a Gatling gun in caliber 25 mm, which missed caseless ammunition. It should have a greater effective range and penetration power than the 20 mm Vulcan. With the caseless cartridge, there was no need to unload the empty casing. With normal cartridges, the case either has to be returned to the magazine or ejected; this is often a problem with combat aircraft.
