Paul Johannes Gerardus Verhaegh (born September 1, 1983 in Sevenum , Netherlands ) is a Dutch football player . With the senior national team , he finished the 2014 World Cup in third place.

Career

In the club

Verhaegh grew up in Kronenberg , near Venlo , and started playing football at VVV-Venlo when he was five . In 1998 he moved to the youth department of PSV Eindhoven , where he was in the second team in 2002/03. In order to give him match practice, PSV loaned him to the second division AGOVV Apeldoorn , where he trained under the former national player Jurrie Koolhof . After a season as a regular at AGOVV, the loan deal ran out; Verhaegh joined FC Den Bosch on a free transfer . This was for the 2004/05 season as a climber of the Eredivisie . There, too, he prevailed, but was relegated with the team. In the following year, the seventh place in the Eerste Divisie was achieved. In the summer of 2006 he signed a contract with Vitesse Arnhem .

For the 2010/11 season Verhaegh was signed by the German second division club FC Augsburg . In 2011, Verhaegh rose to the Bundesliga as team captain with FC Augsburg . In the 2014/15 season , he finished fifth with FC Augsburg and qualified for participation in the Europa League . On December 11, 2015, he scored his first goal in a European Cup with the goal of 2-1 in the 3-1 win in the last group game against Partizan Belgrade . The team qualified for the round of 32 , in which they were eliminated against Liverpool . On August 5, 2017, his contract with FC Augsburg was terminated.

Two days later, Verhaegh moved to league rivals VfL Wolfsburg and signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. Under coaches Andries Jonker , Martin Schmidt and Bruno Labbadia , he was one of the permanent staff and played 31 league games in which he scored two goals. In the relegation against Holstein Kiel , in which VfL Wolfsburg secured the class, Verhaegh was not used due to injury. In the 2018/19 season he was only a reservist behind William and was only used twice in the league by Labbadia. Due to an internal incident, Verhaegh was not in the squad for the Bundesliga game against Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 30. He then agreed with the club on an exemption until his contract ended at the end of the season.

For the season 2019/20 returned to his homeland Verhaegh and the Premiership new boys joined FC Twente Enschede to where he received a one-year contract. Until the season due to the Corona crisis was broken off, the Limburg native only made seven appearances. On June 3, 2020, he announced the end of his active career.

National team

For the U-21 European Championship in 2006 and 2007 , Verhaegh was appointed to the squad of the Dutch selection . The team won the title both times. In 2006 they beat Ukraine 3-0 , and a year later they triumphed 4-1 against Serbia . In the 2007 tournament, Verhaegh was the oldest player in the Jong Oranje squad . After the first two preliminary round matches at the EM 2006 were disappointing, national coach Foppe de Haan Verhaegh took Dwight Tiendalli from the team. Verhaegh did not play a game the following year.

In 2013 he was appointed to the senior national team of the Netherlands for the first time by bond coach Louis van Gaal against Portugal. He made his debut in the friendly against Portugal on August 14, 2013. He was nominated for the 2014 World Cup squad. His only tournament game was the 2-1 victory in the round of 16 against the Mexican national team on June 29, 2014.
