Emil Berggreen (born May 10, 1993 in Helsingør ) is a Danish - Croatian football player . He is under contract with FC Twente and is a former Danish U21 international .

Career

Club career

Berggreen in Denmark

The son of a Croatian mother who came to Denmark at the age of eight and a Danish father was born and raised in the Hovedstaden region . In his youth Berggreen had played for Frem Hellebæk and BK Søllerød-Vedbæk before moving to the A-youth (U19) of the first division club FC Nordsjælland . At the age of 19 he went to Brønshøj BK from the Brønshøj district of Copenhagen . For the second division he came to 50 missions and scored 13 goals. After two years he moved to the first division club and promoted Hobro IK . On July 20, 2014, he made his Superliga debut in a 2-1 win on Matchday 1 against Odense BK when he came on for Quincy Antipas in the 55th minute. On November 9, 2014 Berggreen scored his first two goals in the Superliga in a 3-0 win on Matchday 14 against Brøndby IF . He made 17 appearances and three goals in the first half of the season.

Berggreen in Germany

After half a season he went to Germany for Eintracht Braunschweig in the 2nd Bundesliga during the 2014/15 winter break . His contract ran until June 30, 2017. Berggreen made his debut for BTSV on February 8, 2015 when he came on for Raffael Korte in the 69th minute of the 2-0 draw on matchday 20 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern . On February 23, 2015 he scored his first goal in a 1-1 draw on matchday 22 in the game against RB Leipzig . In his first six months in Braunschweig he made 13 appearances and five goals. In the first half of the following season he made two appearances and one goal in the DFB-Pokal and also made 13 appearances and five goals in the 2nd Bundesliga.

At the end of January 2016, Berggreen switched to Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In February 2016 he underwent knee surgery and in July 2016 he suffered a cruciate ligament tear. Because of these injuries, he only made his Bundesliga debut for Mainz 05 on November 25, 2017, when he was substituted on for Viktor Fischer in the 79th minute of the 2-1 defeat against SC Freiburg and scored his first Bundesliga goal.

Due to an injury, the striker was last used in April 2018, his contract in Mainz, which expired on June 30, 2019, was not extended.

Berggreen in the Netherlands

In July 2019 Berggreen joined the newly promoted FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie . He signed a one-year contract with an option to extend for another year.

National team

At the beginning of September 2014 Berggreen should be nominated for the Croatian U21 national team . However, he basically wanted to play for the Danish association. He made his debut in the Danish U21 on September 9, 2014 when he came on as a substitute in the 7-1 win in the European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria in Aalborg and scored 5-1 in the 65th minute.

On June 1, 2015, Berggreen was nominated by coach Jess Thorup in the squad of the Danish U21 selection for the 2015 European Championship . He was also called up a short time later by Morten Olsen for the friendly game of the Danish national team on June 8, 2015 in Viborg against Montenegro in the squad; he was not used in this game and is not listed in the match report.

On June 17, 2015, he made his debut at the U21 European Championship in the 2-1 victory of the Danes in the opening game in the Eden Arena in Prague against the Czech selection, when he came on in the 89th minute. It was his only use in the tournament and was his last use for the U21s of Denmark, who reached the semi-finals at this tournament and were eliminated there against the eventual title holder Sweden.
