Jess Thorup

Jess Thorup (born February 21, 1970 in Hjerting ) is a former Danish football player and current coach .

Athletic career

Thorup comes from the youth of Odense BK . He made his debut in Danish professional football for the club in 1989 and won the Danish championship title in the same year. In 1991 and 1993 the striker also won the state cup . In 1996 he moved to Germany and joined the KFC Uerdingen 05 , with which he competed in the 2nd Bundesliga . After only three goals in 39 league games, he moved to Austria after a year and a half at the turn of the year 1997/98, where he found accommodation with FC Tirol Innsbruck . He returned to Denmark in the summer of 1998 and played for Esbjerg fB until 2005 . He then let his career end with Ham-Kam in Norway.

In 2006 Thorup returned to Esbjerg fB as assistant coach from Troels Bech . After the dismissal of his boss in November 2008, he took over the team as an interim coach for three games, but then returned to the second line and worked on Ove Pedersen . After his resignation in March 2011, he rose to head coach, but could not prevent relegation from the super league . After the direct promotion, the team placed themselves in the safe midfield and moved into the final of the national cup. A goal from Youssef Toutouh Randers FC defeated Randers FC 1-0 there, and Thorup was then voted coach of the year.

Thorup switched to the Danish Football Association in the summer of 2013. As coach of the Danish U-21 team , he took part in the U-21 European Championship in 2015 , in which the selection reached the semi-finals. There you failed at the eventual winner Sweden . After the club lost the first two games in the 2020/21 Ghent season , Thorup was dismissed as coach on August 20, 2020.
