    mode

The mode was changed once for the 2020/21 season by resolution of the general assembly of the clubs on May 15, 2020.

The 16 clubs initially play the regular season in a double round. The final table serves as the basis for qualifying for various placement rounds.

The four best-placed clubs after 30 match days reach the championship round (play-offs 1). Half of the points achieved from the 30 games of the preliminary round are taken over, so that the further matches can only cause minor changes depending on the table situation. The points from the 1st round were rounded up if necessary, but reduced by one point in the event of a tie.

The clubs that are in positions 5 to 8 after the main round also play a play-off round. The winner of this round plays against the fourth in the championship round for the worst qualifying place for the Europa League. This does not apply if the cup winner or both cup finalists play in the championship round.

The bottom of the table is relegated directly; For him, the champions of Division 1B will play first class in the coming season. In addition, a further general assembly on July 7, 2020 decided that the team in 15th place in the main round had to play relegation games. In the 2020/21 season she will play against the runner-up in Division 1B for the last free place in Division 1A. From the 2021/22 season, the relegation games against the loser of the promotion games in Division 1B were planned.

Since the General Assembly decided on July 31, 2020, after the 2021/22 season, Division 1A is to be reduced to 16 clubs again, there will be no relegation games after this season. Three clubs will be relegated, and only the winner of the promotion games from Division 1B will be promoted.

In contrast to other leagues, such as the Bundesliga , the game plans for the round two are not identical (with rotated home law). Rather, a completely different game plan will be created for the second half of the season.

There is also a peculiarity in the calculation basis for table placement in the event of a tie. Similar to some other European leagues, the first thing that counts is a direct comparison of wins and only then the goal difference.

If individual games are prohibited by orders from the local authorities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is up to the home club to find another venue on the planned match day. Otherwise the game is rated 0: 3 against him.

    Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

    spectator

When planning the new season, it was initially assumed that, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, football games with spectators would be banned until August 31, 2020 , according to the order of the National Security Council . With a resolution of June 24, 2020, the National Security Council allowed 400 spectators to be present at outdoor events from July 1, 2020. If the situation continues to develop positively, the limit should be increased to 800 spectators from August 1, 2020. After the number of new cases increased again from mid-July 2020, this further relaxation was not put into effect at the meeting on July 23, 2020. It remains at the limit of 400 spectators.

The RSC Anderlecht announced on discharge, at least in August 2020 its home games without spectators for safety. On July 26, 2020, the Flemish Region banned the presence of spectators at sporting events on its territory. On July 27, 2020, the National Security Council limited the number of spectators allowed to outdoor events to 200 due to the increased number of cases. After other clubs announced that they wanted to play their games without spectators, Pro League decided on July 28, 2020 that all games in Division 1A and 1B would be played without spectators at least in August.

Due to the decline in the number of cases, the National Security Council again allowed 400 spectators to attend outdoor events on August 20, 2020. The respective mayor can grant a special permit for events starting September 1, 2020, to allow a higher number of spectators.

Of 36 games played (as of August 30, 2020), 36 were played without spectators.

    Transfer period

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the season in many European football leagues only ended after June 30, 2020. Therefore, the transfer period was adjusted by the Belgian Football Association in consultation with UEFA . For changes within Belgium, the previous window from July 1st to August 31st remained. For international bills, this period did not begin until July 7th. There is also a second transfer window from September 8, 2020 to October 5, 2020. The winter transfer window remains unchanged from February 4 to February 1.

    List of goalscorers

The top scorer is officially awarded the Golden Bull ( Le Taureau d'Or or Gouden Stier ) by the Pro League, the association of clubs in divisions 1A and 1B . Only the games of the main round and the play-off are taken into account, but not the subsequent finals for the Europa League qualification.

In the event of a tie, the away goals, the home goals, the number of minutes played, the number of assists and the number of goals without penalties (in this order) are decisive.
