The VV St. Truiden (officially Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging ) is a Belgian football club from Sint-Truiden . He plays in the top division .

history

The club was founded in 1924 after the merger between FC Union and FC Goldstar , two clubs from Sint-Truiden, as Sint-Truidense Voetbal Vereeniging . The colors of the football club were chosen after the colors of the city flag - yellow and blue. Two years later, the club was affiliated to the Royal Belgian Football Association and has since then had the registration number 373. The first game against Cercle Tongeren was played in front of nine spectators. By the late 1940s, the team had qualified for the second division . In addition, the club's name was changed to Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging in 1947 and most recently to Koninlijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging in 1952 . Five years later, the team finished the season in second place in the second division and thus played the next season in the top Belgian division - in the 1st division . In 1959, the previously unknown Raymond Goethals was hired as a trainer. Under his leadership, the team finished second in the first division in 1966.

In 2001, the former Sint-Truidense goalkeeper Jacky Mathijssen was appointed as the new coach and stayed that way for three years, after which he coached the Sporting Charleroi team . For the 2004/05 season, Marc Wilmots took over the coaching position at VV St. Truiden, but was released in February 2005. The team ended the season under the coaching trio Guy Mangelschots , Eddy Raymaekers and Peter Voets .

After a twelfth place in the 2010/11 season , Sint-Truiden began the new season again with coach Guido Brepoels . But in the fourth year of his tenure, Brepoels had to vacate his place after five match days after his team had only recorded one point. He was succeeded by the ex-international Franky Van Der Elst . But even with the new coach, the turnaround did not succeed, and so Sint-Truiden rose after the season as bottom of the table in the second division .

There, the club took fourth place in the overall table in 2012/13 . Since St. Truiden had not completed a tranche first, the club could not participate in the promotion round. In 2013/14 St. Truiden took first place in one of the tranches, but only 3rd place in the promotion round, so that he remained in the 2nd division.

Only in the 2014/15 was St. Truiden first in the final table of the 2nd division and thus rose again to the 1st division (since 2016 Division 1A ). In the other seasons there, participation in the championship play-offs has so far been missed. In the 2016/17 season , however, St. Truiden took first place in his group within Play-off 2, but lost the Play-off final against KRC Genk , so that there has been no participation in the European Cup since the promotion.

After St. Truiden only finished 11th after 16 of 30 match days in the main round in the 2019/20 season , Marc Brys and the assistant coach were dismissed. In the interim, the previous coach of the reserve team, Nicky Hayen, was appointed to lead the training. On December 13, 2019, the board decided that Hayen would continue to work as the main trainer responsible until the end of the year.

On January 2, 2020, Milos Kostic was signed as the new coach for the rest of the season.

David Meekers has been chairman of the association since January 2018.
