Ivan Leko (born February 7, 1978 in Split ) is a former Croatian football player and today's coach .
Career
As a player
Leko's career began in his home country at HNK Hajduk Split . Many European teams also noticed him as a great hope and talent. In 2003 he moved to Spain to FC Málaga . In 2005 he completed half a season at Hajduk Split before Leko moved to Club Bruges on a free transfer . In the national team he was never a regular player, but always in the closer circle. So he came here to eleven inserts and also stood in the 2006 FIFA World Cup with the squad . As a playmaker, he should play a role in both offensive and defensive midfield if a player in the starting line-up should injure himself. Leko played from 2009 in Belgium for Germinal Beerschot . He then worked for SC Lokeren for over five years from 2010 to 2014 , before ending his career as an active player and switching to coaching .
As a trainer
He had his first coaching position from 2014 to 2015 at Oud-Heverlee Löwen in the top Belgian league and then moved to PAOK Thessaloniki , where he worked as an assistant coach alongside his fellow countryman and former teammate Igor Tudor, who was almost the same age . After Tudor was replaced as head coach by the Serbian Vladimir Ivić , Leko also had to leave the club. From the 2016/17 season he took over the post as head coach of VV St. Truiden in the highest Belgian football league, where he replaced Chris O'Loughlin from Northern Ireland . In June 2017 he switched to the Belgian first division club Bruges as a coach . There he was taken into brief custody on October 10, 2018, on suspicion of corruption and money laundering. However, the next day it was found that he was innocent.
After the contract expired at the end of the 2018/19 season, he and Club Bruges agreed not to extend the contract. He then trained for six months at the Al Ain Club in the United Arab Emirates .
In mid-May 2020, Leko took on another job in Belgium. He signed a contract with Royal Antwerp for the 2020/21 season and the next season. His first game will be the cup final of the 2019/20 season, which has been postponed to early August 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
