Richard Ria Alfons De Laet (born November 28, 1988 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian football player who plays mainly in defense .
Career
De Laet started playing football at Royal Antwerp in his hometown. On August 17, 2007, he signed a three-year contract with the then second division side Stoke City. Stoke City is said to have paid £ 100,000 for the then 19-year-old, according to media reports. He played his first game for Stoke City in a 4-1 win against Portsmouth.
In January 2009 De Laet moved to Manchester, where he should first gain experience in the second team. On the last day of the 2008/09 season, De Laet made his league debut in the Premier League , a few days later he was used for the first time in the games against Chile and Japan in the Belgian national team .
From September 2010 De Laet was loaned to Sheffield United (September to October), then to Preston North End (November to December) and finally to Portsmouth FC , where he signed a loan deal until June 2011. For the 2011/12 season, De Laet was awarded to Norwich City . The loan ended early on January 18, 2012. However, de Laet was not in the Manchester squad for the rest of the season.
For the 2012/13 season he moved to Leicester City , who at the time played in the Football League Championship , the second highest English league. During his time at Leicester, the club was promoted to the Premier League.
Since October 2015, however, he has not been on the starting line-up for any game, if he was used at all. In February 2016, a loan to Middlesbrough FC until the end of the season was agreed. Middlesbrough played in the Premier League that year but was relegated at the end of the season.
For the 2016/17 season, de Laet signed a three-year contract with Aston Villa . A transfer fee was agreed. Villa had just been relegated to the Football League Championship .
After a knee injury, he could only play the first three games for Villa in the first season. But even after his recovery, there was not a single game on the pitch for the entire duration. He was therefore loaned to Royal Antwerp in the second half of the 2018/19 season. Antwerp did not exercise the purchase option after this loan, as the transfer fee was too high.
Instead, there was a one-year loan to the Australian club Melbourne City FC . Now that his contract with Villa had expired, nothing stood in the way of a move to Antwerp.
De Laet signed a two-year contract there from the 2019/20 season with an extension option for another year.
