Saxon State Prize for Design

The Saxon State Prize for Design is a design prize that the Free State of Saxony has been awarding since 1992. The Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport is responsible for this .

The conditions for the nomination are that the company or the designer must be based in Saxony and that the products have not been on the market for more than three years at the time of the award ceremony. The prize is endowed with 50,000 euros. The Saxon State Prize for Design is one of the most highly endowed design awards in Germany.

The categories of product design, communication design, young talent and the special price have existed since 2007.

In 2005, 191 proposals were submitted for the tenth Saxon State Prize for Design . The suggestions were spread across the 26 product groups. 25 proposals were submitted for the junior award.

For the eleventh Saxon State Prize for Design 2007, 291 applications were submitted. Of these, 183 designs were allocated to the product design and communication design categories , 37 to the junior prize and 53 to the special prize awarded by the Chamber of Crafts for the first time . Eighteen students from all over Germany applied for the special prize awarded by bruno banani underwear GmbH . The awards were presented on November 12, 2007 during the Design Day in the International Congress Center Dresden .

This special prize was awarded with 2,500 euros. Peter Wiesmann from Bremen won this award for his underwear design .

2009

273 applications were submitted for the 12th Saxon State Prize for Design 2009 . Of these, 95 applications were received in the product design category, 103 applications in the communication design category , 39 applications for the junior design special prize and 36 applications for the chamber of crafts special prize . The awards were presented on November 25, 2009 as part of the German Brand and Design Congress in Hellerau .

Six of the 39 applications received awards. Despite the wide range of the proposed products, the jury was unable to award a first prize. The sponsorship award that was awarded is undoped.

The field of applicants was the largest at the 2009 awards ceremony. Of the 103 applications, five products were awarded. All five awards go to Leipzig. The jury sees a great charisma from the University of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig . The recognitions that have been given are undoped.

2012

For the first time, the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory donated a prize statue made of Meissen porcelain for the winners in the three categories. The Saxon State Prize for Design 2012 reached a new record with 318 entries. There were 154 applications in the product design category, 111 applications in the communication design category , 8 applications in the New Mobility Special Prize and 45 applications in the young design category . For the first time, the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory donated a prize statue made of Meissen porcelain for the winners in the three categories. As part of the Designer's Open, around 12,000 visitors were able to experience the award-winning and nominated objects. In addition, around 10,000 visitors came to the other stops on the exhibition tour. In addition to the exhibition and the TAG DES DESIGNS in the Chemnitz Industrial Museum , the exhibition in the Kunstgewerbemuseum Schloss Pillnitz and in the Cultural History Museum Görlitz, the Kaisertrutz, was shown.

The motto of the 2014 Saxon State Prize for Design was "More value through design". The jury awarded the Saxon State Prize for Design to 14 outstanding products on October 24 at the Designers' Open at the Leipzig Trade Fair . A total of 35 innovative products and designs were nominated for the state award from the 261 entries. The exhibition of the award winners and all nominations took place from September 2014 to 2015 at eight locations - from the Leipzig Trade Fair to the smac in Chemnitz to the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart. The award-winning products were presented to the general public with around 46,000 visitors.

2016

The Saxon State Prize for Design 2016 was based on the motto “Sustainability through design - responsibility for the FUTURE”. The jury was able to award a total of 18 prize winners.

The special award for social design offered innovative approaches to improve the quality of life and master social challenges in terms of social responsibility and shaping our future. The award ceremony took place on October 24, 2016 in the atrium of the Albertinum and gave the Saxon State Prize for Design a festive and dignified conclusion.

The exhibition of the award winners and nominations took place at designxport, Hamburg from January 27 to February 25, 2017 and in the Chemnitz Museum of Industry from March 9 to April 23, 2017.

The prize was awarded in October 2018. A total of 27 design drafts from the areas of product, communication, craftsmanship and sound were awarded. 213 had been submitted. The jury was chaired by Professor Dr. Uta Brandes , the audience award was voted on the competition website.
