Rayan Abdullah

Rayan Abdullah ( Arabic ريان عبدالله; born 1957 in Mosul , Iraq ) is a typographer and designer. Since 2001 he has been professor of typography at the Leipzig University of Art and Graphics .

Career

Rayan Abdullah attended the Technical Secondary School in his native city of Mosul until 1978 . He then went to Romania to study and then to Berlin. At the University of the Arts he studied cultural education until 1984 and then visual communication until 1989 . In his diploma thesis in 1989 he dealt with Arabic script art and graduated as a designer . After completing his training, Abdullah worked in various agencies until 2000. At the same time he taught font design at the Lette Association from 1993 to 2001 . Since 2001 he has been professor of typography at the Leipzig University of Art and Graphics . There, in 2016, he initiated a project in which refugees can continue a design course that they started in their home country in Leipzig. In 2005 and 2007 he was a member of the jury of the Saxon State Prize for Design .
