The Belgian Football Cup 2019/20 began on July 28, 2019 with the first preliminary round matches. The competition was originally supposed to end with a final on March 22, 2020 in Brussels . The cup winner of the year 2018/19 , KV Mechelen , was excluded from this year's cup competition on June 1, 2019 by the complaints committee of the Belgian Football Union because of match fixing in the match against Waasland-Beveren on March 11, 2018 in the first division .

The decision was upheld by the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport on July 17, 2019, following an objection from Mechelen.

The first two rounds were drawn together on July 2, 2019. In the first round 224 clubs played, 160 from the provincial classes and 64 from the third amateur division. In the second round, the 112 winners from the first round were joined by another 48 clubs from the second amateur division.

The third to fifth rounds were drawn together on July 29, 2019.

The Belgian Football Association had planned to hold this draw without any particularities. The exclusion of Mechelen should only be taken into account in the round of 32. After objections from the Pro League Association, the association of the clubs of Divisions 1A and 1B, the following regulation was found. The association pointed out that it was entrusted by the Belgian Football Association with the organization of the Croky Cup from the sixteenth finals.

In addition to the 80 winners of the 2nd round, the 16 clubs of the first amateur division were added in the 3rd round. Accordingly, 48 games would have to be drawn from 96 clubs.

Because of the exclusion of Mechelen, four clubs were given a bye, so that only 46 games were played. But 50 clubs got ahead. In the 4th round no further clubs were added, so that 25 clubs progressed in 50 games. In the 5th round seven clubs from the 2nd division were added to these 25 clubs . By drawing lots was determined from the ranks of the second division Royale Union Saint-Gilloise , which had to start instead of Mechelen only in the sixteenth finals. That resulted in 32 clubs that played 16 games.

Since the sixteenth finals, the remaining clubs in the 1st Division (and Union Saint-Gilloise instead of Mechelen) have also been involved in the Belgian Cup. These 16 clubs were in one lottery pot; the 16 winners of the 5th round in the other. Pairings between clubs in the first division were therefore excluded.

With the exception of the semi-finals, all matches are played in just one game. If there is a draw after 90 minutes, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out follow. There are also second legs in the semifinals. If both teams have scored the same number of goals after the second leg, the away goals rule applies ; if the number of goals scored away is the same, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out follow.

Effects of the corono pandemic

After COVID-19 diseases also increased in Belgium from March 5, 2020 , Pro League decided on the morning of March 12, 2020, after consulting with experts, to postpone the cup final planned for March 22, 2020 to a date that has not yet been determined.

On March 19, 2020, after consulting the regional associations for amateur sports and Pro League, the Belgian Football Association decided that no professional games would take place in Belgium up to and including April 30, 2020.

After the National Security Council had banned all sporting events (including those without spectators) until July 31, 2020 on May 6, 2020, and UEFA expects the Europe League participants to register by August 3, 2020 for the 2020/21 season, decided the general assembly of all Pro League clubs on May 15, 2020, the cup final as a ghost game on August 1 or 2, 2020. Should this not be possible, the Belgian participants for the Europe League would be determined according to the break-off table of Division 1A .

After consultation with the local authorities, August 1st, 2020 was set as the new date for the cup final. Although the restrictions have since been relaxed, it took place without spectators. Only the players in the squad should be eligible to play for the 2020/21 season. This was prohibited by FIFA in mid-June 2020 . Only the squad for the 2019/20 season was eligible to play, provided that the player also had a contract with the club on August 1, 2020.
