The Royal Antwerp Football Club vzw , commonly known in the German-speaking countries as Royal Antwerp , more rarely FC Antwerp , is a football club from the Belgian city of Antwerp .
history
The club was founded on September 1, 1880, making it the oldest football club in Belgium, which earned it the nickname "The Great Old". 1993 Royal Antwerp reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup . However , the Antwerp team lost the final played in London's Wembley Stadium 3-1 against Italian representatives AC Parma . This makes Royal Antwerp the last Belgian club to reach a final in a European competition.
Royal Antwerp has been working with Manchester United since 1998 . Young, mostly non-European talents often first gain match experience at Royal Antwerp.
Royal Antwerp has played in the Bosuil Stadium since 1923, which currently has 16,144 seats. This was built in place of the Broodstraat stadium , where the club had played its games since 1908.
In recent years the RAFC has been represented in the second division . The four-time Belgian champion has been back in Division 1A since 2017 . For this, László Bölöni was hired as the new coach for two years. At the end of the regular round, Antwerp finished 8th. In the following play-off round you could not qualify for a European competition.
Due to this placement, the contract with Bölöni was extended until summer 2020. In the following season , Antwerp finished in 6th place at the end of the regular round, but was able to improve to 4th place within the championship play-off. As a result, the club played in the Europa League play-off final against the winner of the play-off 2B Sporting Charleroi .
After a 3-2 win in this game, Antwerp was athletically eligible for the 2nd qualifying round for the Europa League . After the Belgian court of arbitration ruled on 17 July 2019 for sport as a court of appeal, KV Mechelen was excluded from the first division due to the manipulation of the game KV Mechelen against Waasland-Beveren on 11 March 2018 in the 2017/18 season, among other things from the Europa League , this exclusion was confirmed by UEFA on July 18, 2019. All Belgian clubs moved up to a qualifying place. Antwerp thus had a starting place in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
In mid-May 2020, the association decided not to extend the expiring contract with Bölöni. A few days later, Ivan Leko was signed as coach until the end of the 2021/22 season.
