Victor Edward Louis "Vic" Mees (born January 26, 1927 in Schoten ; † November 11, 2012 ) was a Belgian football player .

Career

In the club

Mees came from Merksem , a district of Antwerp. In his hometown he also started playing football for Royal Antwerp . The midfielder played his first competitive games for the traditional club in the 1945/46 round and became a regular player. After that, he was an indispensable part of the RFC's starting line-up and played almost all competitive games for years. He always played with the team in the top third of the table, but he could celebrate his first title in 1955 with the Belgian Cup . The following year he was awarded the Golden Shoe for the best Belgian footballer, before he reached the high point of his career by winning the national championship in 1957. This title entitles the RFC to participate in the European Champions Cup . There, the team met defending champions Real Madrid in the first round and lost 5-2 on aggregate. After these successes he played with the RFC again and again for the championship, but could not win any other titles. So he ended his career after 554 league games and a total of 19 seasons for the Royal Antwerp.

In the national team

Mees made his debut in the national team in 1949 in a friendly against Spain . Then he was able to establish himself in the national team and was used in almost all friendly matches. In qualifying for the 1954 World Cup , he made his first competitive appearances and was able to qualify successfully with Belgium. At the 1954 World Cup he was then appointed to the Belgian squad by national coach Doug Livingstone . During the preliminary round, Mees was on the field in both games of the Belgians and was eliminated with these as bottom of the table. After the disappointing World Cup participation, he remained a regular in the national team and was from 1958 to 1972 even before Bernard Voorhoof record national player in Belgium. In 1960 he ended his career in the Belgian national football team after a total of 68 international appearances, in which he scored three goals. Between 1949 and 1960 he was called up 73 times for the Belgian national team.
