Fons Van Brandt
Alfons "Fons" Van Brandt (born September 24, 1927 in Kessel , today Nijlen , † August 24, 2011 in Lier ) was a Belgian football player . In 1955, the defensive player was awarded the Golden Boot as Belgium's Player of the Year.
Athletic career
Van Brandt first played in his birthplace at FC Kessel , which he left for Lierse SK after the end of World War II . By the end of his career, forced by a knee injury in 1958, he played in 330 competitive games for the club.
In 1950 Van Brandt made his debut for the Belgian national team . At the World Cup in 1954 he was part of the squad of the "red devils" , but Belgium was eliminated early in the group as bottom. From 1950 to 1958 he was called up for 43 internationals and was used in 38 of them.
