The Marlow Lock

The Marlow Lock is a lock on the River Thames in Marlow , Buckinghamshire , England . The first lock was built in 1773 by the Thames Navigation Commission .

history

In the Domesday Book is a defensive reported in Marlow. There are mentions from the 14th century of a water lock and a winch to pull the boats through the lock. The lock was very problematic and there are reports from the 16th and 17th centuries of quarrels between the millers and the boatmen. The shallow draft was a particular problem. The first lock was made from spruce wood in 1773 and was one of the first to be built after the reorganization of navigation on the Thames in 1770. The lock was upriver from today's lock. It was still problematic. Pulleys were needed to steer the boats into the chamber and there was no towpath so the boats needed very long tow lines. The lock had to be extensively repaired in 1780 and a year later eel traps were removed from the old lock so that they can be used in an emergency. The first lock keeper's house was built in 1815. In 1825, the lock was built in its current location using Heading Stone limestone from the Headington Quarries . The weir was renewed in 1872. The lock was last renovated in 1927.

The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley lived in Marlow and spent much of his time in his boat on the river above the lock.

The river above the lock

The weir is stretched far up the river behind the lock. Then the Marlow Bridge is reached. The Temple Mill Iceland is only just below the Temple Lock .

The Thames Path leads out of Marlow and runs to Temple Lock on the Buckinghamshire side of the river.
