The Marlow Bridge is a road bridge over the River Thames , the place Marlow , Buckinghamshire , England with the past on the other side village of Bisham, Berkshire , connects.

description

The Chain Bridge was built by William Tierney Clark between 1829 and 1832 and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in Europe. It served him as a model for the Széchenyi chain bridge in Budapest, which he later built .

Its massive stone towers standing above the river bank have the shape of a triumphal arch . Their pillar spacing is 71.6 m (235 ft). The towers carry two chain strands arranged one above the other on both sides. The upper strands consist of five chains of iron bars ( eyebars ) arranged next to each other, the lower ones from 4 , which are movably connected to one another by means of eyes and bolts . The hangers are alternately attached to the upper and lower chain strand. The archway of the towers can only be passed by a car, while the roadway is wide enough for two vehicles. There are wide walkways outside the chain strands. They are secured by wooden half-timbered railings, which also contribute to the stiffening of the deck girder.

The bridge stands as since 1949 Grade I listed building under monument protection .

In 1957 doubts arose about the safety of the bridge, which led to long discussions about its renovation or a new construction. Finally, between 1965 and 1966, all metal parts of the bridge were renewed.
