Birger Danny Verstraete (born April 16, 1994 in Ostend ) is a Belgian soccer player who has been under contract with the German Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln since the 2019/20 season . From the 2020/21 season he is loaned to the Belgian first division Royal Antwerp . He is mainly used in defensive and central midfield and has completed 11 internationals for various Belgian national teams.
Career
After playing in the youth teams of his home club KV Ostend for seven years , he moved to FC Bruges in the summer of 2009 within the youth division .
His professional career began there in summer 2012. In the 2014/15 season he was loaned out to the then promoted Royal Excel Mouscron for a year .
In the summer of 2015, Verstraete moved to KV Kortrijk , where he was actually used for the first time in a larger number of games. In January 2017 he moved from there to KAA Gent with a 3½ year contract .
The midfielder moved to the German Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln for the 2019/20 season , with whom he received a contract that was valid until June 2023. After playing nine competitive games for 1. FC Köln, he was no longer in the matchday squad since the turn of the year 2019/20.
At the beginning of May 2020, Verstraete was critical of the planned resumption of game operations in the Bundesliga after the interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic in an interview with the Flemish television company VRT . At that time, 1. FC Köln was still training in small groups, and two players and a physiotherapist from his group tested positive. He is not in the mood for football. After a conversation with 1. FC Köln, translation errors were invoked in this regard.
In mid-June 2020, a one-year loan was agreed with Belgian first division Royal Antwerp for the 2020/21 season , the loan agreement includes a purchase option. However, Verstraete will not be eligible to play for the cup final of the 2019/20 season planned for August 1, 2020, as he was not part of the Antwerp squad this season.
National team
Between 2012 and 2016, Verstraete made a total of ten appearances for the Belgian U19 and U21 national teams .
On September 7, 2018, he was in the senior national team for the only time so far in the friendly match in Scotland . In the 4-0 win in Glasgow , Verstraete came on for Mousa Dembélé in the 85th minute .
