Career

societies

Dembélé comes from the youth of Berchem Sport . The midfielder began his professional career on April 24, 2004 with the Belgian club Germinal Beerschot , when he made his Jupiler Pro League debut against RSC Charleroi . In 2005 he moved on to the Dutch honorary division Willem II Tilburg . There he prevailed as a regular player and after one season moved to league rivals AZ Alkmaar , who had been coached by Louis van Gaal since 2005 . In his first season in 2006/07 , he finished third with Alkmaar and qualified for the 2007/08 UEFA Cup . There they prevailed in the first round against the sixth of the Portuguese championship FC Paços de Ferreira with a single away goal. In the following group stage with five teams, in which each had two away and two home games, they finished fourth behind FC Everton , 1. FC Nürnberg and Zenit Saint Petersburg and were eliminated. They could only win the home game against AE Larisa , in which he scored the only goal. In the 2007/08 Eredivisie , Alkmaar only finished 11th. In the Eredivisie 2008/09 , however, Alkmaar was able to win the championship, to which Dembélé contributed with ten goals. After winning the championship, van Gaal moved to the German record champions FC Bayern Munich . His former team had no chance in the group stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League and only finished last. Dembélé was used in the six group games, none of which was won. In the championship , too , Alkmaar was unable to build on the previous season's performances under the new coach Ronald Koeman , who was sacked after seven defeats, or under Dick Advocaat , who also coached the Belgian national team, but in the end still achieved with the fifth Place the 3rd qualifying round of the Europa League 2010/11 .

Dembélé only scored four goals and in the summer of 2010 he moved to Fulham in England, where he signed a three-year contract. In his first Premier League season he finished 8th with Fulham, but qualified for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League via the fair play rating . There Fulham prevailed in the first round against the third of the Faroese football championship 2010 NSÍ Runavík with a 3-0 home game and a goalless draw in the second leg, in which he was not in the squad. He came only in the 3rd qualifying round in the 2-0 against RNK Split and in the playoffs against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk for use after which Fulham moved into the group stage. There they finished third behind FC Twente Enschede and Wisła Krakau and were eliminated. Dembélé was used in four group matches, but remained without a goal. In the Premier League 2011/12 Fulham deteriorated by one place and could not use the back door "fair play rating" to play again in Europe. He was able to do so, because after 62 games and five goals for Fulham FC, he moved to league rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2012 , who qualified fourth for the group stage of the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League . Dembélé played in four group stage games for Tottenham and reached the sixteenth-finals against Olympique Lyon with the Spurs . After a 2-1 home game, he made it 1-1 with his goal in the last minute in the second leg and thus progressed. In the round of 16 against Inter Milan they then prevailed after a 3-0 home win with a 1: 4 after extra time in the second leg due to the away goals rule . In the quarter-finals against FC Basel , both games ended 2-2, so there was a penalty shoot-out that his teammates lost 4-1 - he was already substituted. In the league , the Spurs finished fifth and were thus qualified for the play-off round of the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League . Here they prevailed 5-0 and 3-0 against the Georgian champions Dinamo Tbilisi . In the group stage they then won all games against Anzhi Makhachkala , Sheriff Tiraspol and Tromsø IL , where he contributed a goal to the 2-0 win at the game in Norway. In the sixteenth finals they lost at Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 0-1, but were able to win the second leg 3-1. Due to injury, he could not take part in the round of 16 against the eventual finalists Benfica Lisbon , in which the Spurs were eliminated. In the Premier League 2013/14 the sixth place was occupied, which meant participation in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League 2014/15 . In this, the Spurs prevailed under the new Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino 2-1 and 3-0 against the Cypriot runner-up AEL Limassol . In the group stage, the Spurs started with two draws against FK Partizan Belgrade (0-0) and Beşiktaş Istanbul (1-1), but then won three games and were already qualified for the knockout round before the last match day. They awarded the group victory with a 0: 1 against Beşiktaş on the last day of the match. In the sixteenth finals, which brought the end against Fiorentina , he was not used. They were also qualified for the group stage of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League by finishing fifth in the 2014/15 Premier League . But he was only used in the two group games against RSC Anderlecht and scored the 2-1 winner in the home game in the 87th minute. This ultimately meant winning the group and making it to the sixteenth-finals, where they faced Fiorentina like last year, but this time turned the tables. Dembélé was only used in the 1-1 draw in Florence. In the round of 16 they had no chance against the German representative Borussia Dortmund and lost with 0: 3 and 1: 2. In the Premier League 2015/16 they fought for a long time with the eventual surprise champions Leicester City , but were only able to win one of the last five games and then had to let local rivals Arsenal pass by. Third place is the best position since the Premier League was founded in the 1992/93 season .

In January 2019 Dembélé moved to China to the club Guangzhou R & F and signed while a three-year contract. Here he completed 26 games in his first season in the Chinese Super League and scored one goal.

National team

In 2002 and 2003 Dembélé, whose father is from Mali and whose mother is Belgian, played three games in the Belgian U-16 team. In October 2003 he took part with the U-17s in the first qualifying round for the U-17 European Football Championship 2004 in Belgium , which the Belgian juniors won. The mini-tournament of the second qualifying round also took place in Belgium, but this time they could not use the home advantage and only came second. After a 5-0 win in a friendly against New Zealand, he then moved to the U-18s, but only played one game for them and then played in the U-19 team. With this he took part in October 2004 in the first qualifying round for the U-19 European Football Championship in 2005 . Again he didn't have to travel far, because this mini-tournament also took place in his home country and this time they were able to use the home advantage again. In May 2005 they had to travel to Hungary for the second qualifying round , where they finished second behind Armenia in the mini-tournament.

Three months after his last U-19 international match, Dembélé played his first international match for the senior team . On May 20, 2006, he came on as a substitute for Slovakia in the second half. He was then used in the next five games, including four games in qualifying for the European Championship 2008 , but only played over 90 minutes once. In his sixth game, he came on in the 70th minute against Azerbaijan , scored the 3-0 final score 12 minutes later with his first international goal, but received the red card four minutes later and was suspended for the next qualifying game. In 2007 he was substituted in for the first friendly against the Czech Republic , but the three qualifying matches that followed took place without him. In the last six qualifying games he was then taken into account again and scored the 1-0 and 3-1 goals in the 3-2 win against Serbia (one minute before the 3-2). Overall, he scored four goals in qualifying, more than a quarter of Belgian goals. As fifth, the Belgians had nothing to do with the outcome of the qualification.

Instead of the European Championship finals in 2008, he then took part with the Belgian selection at the Olympic Games in Beijing , in which the Belgians took fourth place. Dembélé was used in all six games and scored three goals. He was thus together with the Nigerian Victor Obinna the second top scorer and thus scored one more goal than Lionel Messi . In the quarter-finals against Italy he first scored the 1-1 equalizer and then scored the 3-2 winner in the 80th minute. Other players on this team included Marouane Fellaini , Vincent Kompany , Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen , who, like him, were to become pillars of the senior national team in the next few years.

After the Olympic Games, it was also used in eight qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup . The Belgians could only win three games and he only managed one goal in a 2: 4 against Bosnia and Herzegovina . The fact that after six games national coach René Vandereycken was dismissed and replaced by Franky Vercauteren , because he did not succeed in the turnaround and he was replaced by Dick Advocaat before the last game , hadn't achieved much . So Dembélé had to do with three national coaches in one year. After Advocaat announced his resignation on April 15, 2010, he got to do with his fourth national coach, Georges Leekens . But even under him, the qualification for the EM 2012 failed , in which Dembélé was used six times and was missing twice due to injury. The Belgians could only win both games against Kazakhstan and once against Azerbaijan and Austria . In the end, they finished third behind Germany and Turkey . On May 13, 2012, Leekens announced his resignation and Dembélé got Marc Wilmots as the fifth national coach. Wilmots then qualified for the 2014 World Cup , in which Dembélé was used in the group matches against Algeria and South Korea . Due to a muscle injury, he could not be used in the round of 16 against the USA and in the quarter-finals against the eventual runner-up Argentina .

After the World Cup, he only made a few appearances and was not used at all in the successfully completed qualification for the EM 2016 , but only in friendly matches. Nevertheless, he was included in Belgium's squad for the 2016 European Football Championship in France. He started against Ireland in the second group game, but was replaced by Radja Nainggolan after 57 minutes . This was his only use at the European Championship and after a 1: 3 in the quarterfinals against Wales his team was eliminated.

Dembélé was also appointed to the Belgian squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia . After Belgium lost 1-0 to France in the semifinals , Dembélé and his team had to play for third place against England ; The Belgians won this game 2-0. Two months after the World Cup, he was last used for the national team.
