Vertonghen began his career at the Flemish football club VK Tielrode . In 2003 he was accepted into the youth team of Germinal Beerschot . Vertonghen later played for Ajax Amsterdam's second team . For the 2006/07 season he was included in the A-Team of Ajax. On December 3, 2006, in a 6-0 win over Willem II Tilburg , Vertonghen made his debut in the Eredivisie . In order to be able to give him more match practice, the Ajax officials decided to loan the then youngster during the winter break. The RKC Waalwijk secured the services of the defensive player for the rest of the season. At the lower class club, Vertonghen came to regular missions and prevailed. After his return to Amsterdam, the young player was a regular on the professional team and made the breakthrough. In 2010 he won the national cup and was then able to win the Dutch championship twice in a row .

For the 2012/13 season he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for around 12.5 million euros . There he also asserted himself as a regular player and has now played over 220 league games and over 300 competitive games for Tottenham.

With the late end of the 2019/20 season on July 26, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , his contract with Tottemham ended. In August 2020 he signed a three-year contract with Benfica Lisbon .

National team

Vertonghen made his senior national team debut on June 2, 2007 in a 2-1 defeat by Portugal . With the U-23 team, Vertonghen took part in the 2008 Olympic Games and played six appearances for the colors of his country. In the following years, however, he failed with the national team in both the 2010 World Cup qualification and the 2012 European Championship qualification .

On June 26, 2014, Vertonghen was elected Man of the Match at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil after beating South Korea 1-0 in the group game .

At the European Championships in France in 2016 he was accepted as a regular player in Belgium and was on the field for the full season in the first four games up to the round of 16. Then he buckled in training and dropped out for the quarterfinals. Against Wales, the team lost 3-1 and was eliminated.

On October 7, 2017, he set the 26-year-old record of Jan Ceulemans as Belgium's record national player in the 4: 3 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with his 96th international match . Only three days later he was in a game against Cyprus again over the full game; with this commitment he became the record national player in his home country. On June 2, 2018, he became the first Belgian to make his 100th international match .
