Nuno Albertino Varela Tavares (born January 26, 2000 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese soccer player who is currently under contract with the first division club Benfica Lisbon .
Career
society
Born in Lisbon , Tavares played for local clubs Casa Pia AC and Sporting Lisbon in his youth before joining the renowned Benfica Academy in Lisbon . He made his professional football debut on October 27, 2018, playing the full game in the reserve team's 3-2 home win over Sporting Covilhã . After initial difficulties, he made it into the starting line-up of the second division team at the turn of the year 18/19 and prepared three goals in nine consecutive appearances. In mid-February he lost his regular position in the left defense to the Dutchman Godfried Frimpong and only made two appearances in the remaining 2018/19 season .
On August 4, 2019, Tavares made his first team debut in the first competitive game of the new 2018/19 season , the Portuguese Supercup . In the 5-0 victory over rival Sporting CP, he was on the field from the start. Six days later, he made his debut in the 5-0 win against FC Paços de Ferreira at home in Estádio da Luz in the top Portuguese division , scoring one goal and preparing two.
National team
From February to June 2018, Tavares played eight games for the Portuguese U18 national team . From September 2018 he played 14 times for the U19s , and since September 2019 he has played for the U21s .
