Sport Lisboa e Benfica B , (SL Benfica B for short) is a Portuguese soccer team. It is the second team of the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon . This was active from 1999 to 2006 before it became part of the club again in 2012 after six years of abstinence. The team plays in the Segunda Liga , the second highest Portuguese division.
Regulations for official games
The squads of B-teams of Portuguese first division clubs are limited. At official games, for example, there must be at least ten players from your own youth in the squad - and they can only be between 15 and 21 years old. The number of players over the age of 23 is limited to three. Furthermore, the B teams are not allowed to take part in any cup competition. The use of A-team players in the B-team and vice versa is permitted.
history
1999-2006
The B-team started for the 1999/2000 season. The aim was for the club's youth and reserve players to gain match practice in order to be better prepared for professional football. The team started in the third division and was relegated after three years. It was not until 2005 that the team rose again to the third division before it was completely disbanded in 2006.
2012 until today
For the 2012/13 season, the B-team Benficas, as well as five other first division clubs, were newly founded and integrated directly into the Segunda League , which resulted in an increase in the latter from 16 to 22 teams. The registration of the team cost € 50,000.
Luís Norton de Matos became the first coach for the new team. Due to the rules for the B-teams and the formation of a complete team, the youth players in particular were committed. Miguel Rosa , who was voted the best player in the 2010/11 season and the best shooting star in the second division for the 2011/12 season, led the team into the season as captain. Regular goalkeeper was Mika Domingues , who reached the final at the U-20 World Cup 2011 with Portugal and was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament. The first game of the season against Sporting Braga B ended 2-2. After only a few match days, the previous top performer André Gomes made the leap into the first team. At the end of the season, Benfica B ended up in sixth place and was the best B team of the season behind Sporting CP B (4th). Miguel Rosa was the team's top scorer with 17 goals and, alongside two other players, second best in the league. As a result, he was also voted the season's best player.
Just one season later, de Matos was replaced by Hélder Cristóvão . The new coach named Rúben Pinto captain after the departure of Miguel Rosa. In addition to the latter, many other regular players left the club. In addition, Bruno Varela ousted Mika as regular goalkeeper. Like André Gomes in 2012, Ivan Cavaleiro made it to the first team after ten match days (7 goals and 2 assists) during the season. Benfica B ended the season in 5th place and was the best B team of the season behind FC Porto B (2nd).
