history

The association was founded on December 25, 1951 as Ginásio Clube de Arouca. For a long time the club played under-class. In 2001 he was promoted to the supra-regional III Divisão for the first time. Relegation followed after a season. The next promotion was achieved in 2003, but this time too the club remained athletically inferior and was relegated again after only one year.

After the third promotion in 2007, FC Arouca became champions of the III Divisão - Série C and qualified for the II Divisão . In the second year there was also the championship and promotion to the Liga de Honra (honor league).

In 2013 he was promoted to the Primeira Liga , the first Portuguese league. In the first season after promotion, under coach Pedro Emanuel , he managed to stay in the league when he reached 12th place. For the UEFA Europa League 2016/17 , the club qualified internationally for the first time by finishing fifth in the league in the 2015/16 season . After two draws against Heracles Almelo , the away goals rule led to the fourth qualifying round, where they were eliminated against Olympiacos .

In the 2016/17 season they were relegated from the top division and have been playing in the Segunda League since then .
