Pedro Emanuel dos Santos Martins Silva (born February 11, 1975 in Luanda , Angola ) is a former Portuguese soccer player and today's soccer coach . He played as a defender at FC Porto and Boavista Porto, among others .

Career

In the club

He began his career in the Portuguese Second League , where he played for as many different clubs in three years . In 1996 Boavista Porto officials noticed him and signed him. During his time at Boavista he achieved the historic victory of the Portuguese league in the 2000/01 season , Boavista's only championship to date .

At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he was facing a move to Benfica Lisbon , but he decided to move to league rivals FC Porto , who was coached by José Mourinho at the time. In his first season in Porto, he immediately won the Portuguese Championship, the Portuguese Cup and the UEFA Cup . The following year he also won the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 win over AS Monaco in the Arena Auf Schalke in Gelsenkirchen .

By winning the Champions League, Emanuel was also in the final of the World Cup , where he scored the decisive penalty against Once Caldas . Since it was the last play of the World Cup, Pedro Emanuel was the last player to touch the last ball of the competition.

In the 2005/06 season Emanuel was named captain of FC Portos, as the then coach Co Adriaanse did not want a goalkeeper ( Vítor Baía ) as captain and Jorge Costa was not his first choice. He missed the following season due to a serious injury. In the 2007/08 season , Pedro Emanuel again played 19 championship games and won his fifth championship title. Emanuel ended his active football career at the end of the 2008/09 season , after only five appearances, but with his sixth championship.

In the national team

Apart from four internationals for Portugal's U21 national team, Pedro Emanuel has not played any senior internationals for Portugal. Since Pedro Emanuel was born in Luanda, Angola's Football Association officials tried to convince Pedro Emanuel to play for the Angolan national team after Angola qualified for the 2006 World Cup . He even accepted the offer, but FIFA did not allow it, as he had already played for Portugal's U-21s.

As a trainer

After finishing his active career, Pedro Emanuel became head coach of the U-17 team at FC Portos, with whom he won the championship straight away. In July 2010 Emanuel became the assistant coach of André Villas-Boas in the first team.

For the 2011/12 season Emanuel was the coach of the Académica de Coimbra . Despite a mixed season in the league, he made it to the cup final with Académica , which was won 1-0 against Sporting Lisbon . In 2013 he became a coach at FC Arouca . The team had just made it to the Primeira League . In May 2015, after the 2014/15 season , he stopped coaching as he moved to Apollon Limassol in Cyprus .
