The Segunda Liga is the second highest division in Portuguese football. It was founded in 1990 under the name Segunda Divisão de Honra (Second Honor Division) as a single-track league and pushed ahead of the three-track Segunda Divisão , which became the third-highest Portuguese league. When the Portuguese professional league association LPFP took over the first two divisions in 2000 , the second highest league was named Segunda Liga (Second League).

In the seasons 2002/03 to 2005/06 the official name of the 2nd Portuguese soccer league was Liga de Honra , the Portuguese name for honor division . From the 2007/08 season , the league name was marketed commercially, although Liga de Honra continued to be used in common parlance. It is run professionally and administered by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional , organized from the professional clubs and the Portuguese Football Association. The league initially consisted of 18 clubs, which are played in a round trip. By the 2004/05 season , the first three placed in the first division, the SuperLiga , and the last three in the Segunda Divisão Portuguesa rose . From the 2006/07 season , the professional leagues were reduced to 16 participants, which is why only two promoted, but four relegated were played in the 2005/06 season .

In the 2006/07 season the league was named after the main sponsor in Liga Vitalis . In the 2010/11 season , Liga Orangina was used as the official name . For the 2012/13 season , the division, renamed Segunda League , was increased to 22 clubs (with 6 second teams from first division clubs (Benfica, Sporting, Porto, Braga, Guimaraes, Maritimo) being included) and there are two promoted and relegated teams.

After the league was increased to 24 clubs in the 2014/15 season , it will be reduced to 22 clubs again in 2016/17. Therefore, five teams will be relegated in 2016. In 2017/18 only 20 teams took part.
