Jorge Paulo Costa Almeida (born October 14, 1971 in Porto ) is a former Portuguese football player and current coach . He is called Bicho (animal) or Tanque (tank) by his colleagues and fans .
Career as a player
society
Costa joined the professional squad of FC Porto for the 1989/90 season . Before that, he played for the dragon youth division . But before he had his first competitive game for Porto, three years should pass. In the first year he usually only trained with the professional team and was active for the reserve. In order to give him more game practice and to be able to adjust him to the first division, the FC officials decided to borrow the defender. In the summer of 1990 he was loaned to FC Penafiel . In the lower class club he developed and came to regular assignments. In the following season, Costa was loaned for the second time. At league competitor Marítimo Funchal from Madeira , he was immediately a regular and showed good performances. For the 1992/93 season he was finally part of the FC Porto squad. Rapid development followed and Costa became a top performer and leader.
In the 1997/98 season he got the number 2 (previously he played with the number 22) and the captaincy of João Domingos Pinto . Before the 2001/02 season he got into a dispute with the then coach Octávio Machado . For this reason he was sent into exile in England, at Charlton Athletic . Machado was then heavily criticized by the fans and at the end of the season he took his hat and left Porto. With José Mourinho as the new coach, Costa was put back into duty and he led the team to the 2004 Champions League triumph . On May 26, 2004, he was able to stretch the trophy in the Gelsenkirchen stadium. In 2003 he was able to celebrate a triple by winning the UEFA Cup , the championship and the national cup . After the Champions League success, the World Cup was brought to Porto in December 2004 .
During the winter break of 2005, Costa announced that he would be moving to Standard Liège in Belgium . In his last six months as a professional, he helped to achieve the Belgian runner-up title. Although Costa still had a contract until 2007, he resigned from active football in the summer of 2006 for personal reasons.
Career as a coach
In December 2006, Costa was hired as assistant coach to Rogério Gonçalves at Sporting Braga . On February 19, 2007 Gonçalves was fired and Costa was introduced as his successor. At the end of the season, the team reached 4th place in the league. On October 30th of the same year, Costa was also fired.
In June 2008 he signed a contract with the Portuguese second division club SC Olhanense , with whom he was promoted to the Liga Sagres at the end of the 2008/09 season . In the summer of 2010 he moved to the league competitor Académica de Coimbra , which he left again in December 2010 during the first half of the season. After the last matchday of Liga 1 2010/11 , Jorge Costa was presented on May 22, 2011 as the successor to Alin Minteuan in the position of head coach of CFR Cluj . Although CFR were leaders, Costa was dismissed on April 8, 2012 after the 5-0 home defeat in the championship game against Rapid Bucharest and replaced by Ioan Andone .
In October 2012, Costa signed a two-year contract with AEL Limassol . After another stop in Cyprus at Anorthosis Famagusta , Costa returned to Portugal in February 2014 for FC Paços de Ferreira . In July 2014 he took over the national team from Gabon and led the team to participate in the 2015 African Cup of Nations .
National team
In 1991 he was youth world champion with Portugal . He participated in all six encounters.
For a long time he formed a very good defensive duo with Fernando Couto . Together they were both nominated for the Portuguese squad for the 2000 European Football Championship in Belgium and the Netherlands .
After the soccer World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002 , he resigned from the national team.
