André Filipe Tavares Gomes (born July 30, 1993 in Porto ) is a Portuguese football player who has been under contract with Everton FC since summer 2018 .

Club career

youth

André Gomes began his footballing career in his hometown club FC Porto , where he was also early captain of the juniors. At the age of 15 he joined the Pasteleira U17 . After a year he moved to the direct local rivals of FC Porto, Boavista Porto . His achievements made him into the Portuguese U-17 national team and aroused the interest of Benfica Lisbon , who signed him in 2011. Due to his great footballing potential, he was also appointed captain of the youth team here.

Benfica Lisbon

Gomes made his debut for the Benfica A-team during a friendly against Gil Vicente FC on July 28, 2012 .

He started the 2012/13 season in the Segunda Liga with the second team from Benfica Lisbon, when he prevented the opening defeat against Sporting Braga B in his first game with his first goal in the league on August 11, 2012 .

On October 18, 2012, in the third round of the Portuguese Cup , André Gomes made his official debut in the A-squad. After being substituted on, he convinced coach Jorge Jesus with his goal to beat SC Freamunde 4-0 . A week later, on October 27, 2012, he made his first division debut and scored a goal to beat Gil Vicente 3-0.

At the end of January 2014, Benfica Lisbon sold the transfer rights of André Gomes for 15 million euros and a 25% stake in a resale to the player fund Meriton Capital Limited . Gomes nevertheless played the 2013/14 season at Benfica Lisbon and together with his team achieved the national triple of championship, cup and league cup victory .

Change to Spain

For the 2014/15 season , André Gomes joined the Spanish first division side FC Valencia on.

After two years at Valencia, Gomes moved to FC Barcelona for the 2016/17 season . He received a five-year contract dated June 30, 2021 with an exit clause of EUR 100 million and a transfer fee of EUR 35 million, which can increase by EUR 20 million depending on success and by another EUR 15 million if Gomes does FIFA Ballon d'Or should win.

Everton FC

For the 2018/19 season, Gomes moved to the English Premier League for Everton for a loan fee of 2.25 million euros for a year on loan . He was used in 27 league games (including 24 from the start) and scored one goal. For the 2019/20 season , Everton FC finally acquired the transfer rights to Gomes for 25 million euros plus bonus payments, who received a new contract with a term until June 30, 2022.

National team career

André Gomes was already part of the U-17 , U-18 , U-19 , U-20 and U-21 national teams of Portugal . In 2012 he took part in the U-19 European Championship , in 2013 the U-20 World Championship . On September 7, 2014, he made his debut in the European Championship qualifier against Albania in the senior national team .

At the European Championship 2016 , Gomes was in Portugal's squad . In the opening game against Iceland , he provided the Portuguese with the first goal of the tournament by Nani (final score 1: 1). In the first four games he was in the starting line-up. He missed the quarter-finals due to an injury. In the semifinals against Wales he was used again as a substitute in the last quarter of an hour. He watched the final against hosts France from the bench. With a 1-0 victory after extra time, Portugal became European champions for the first time .
