Eliseu (born October 1, 1983 in Angra do Heroísmo ; full name Eliseu Pereira dos Santos ) is a former Portuguese football player with roots in the Azores.
Career
society
Eliseu started his career at Marítimo Angra, from where he came to Belenenses Lisbon . In 2002 he was brought to the Belenenses first team. In its first season, the club was ninth in the league. In 2003/04 the team with Eliseu was just able to prevent relegation with 15th place. After ninth place in the following season, the midfielder was loaned to the second division Varzim SC for one season .
There he was fourth in the second division. After the loan ended, he immediately returned to Lisbon and finished fifth in the league with Belenenses and reached the cup final, where they lost 1-0 to Sporting Lisbon .
At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, the Portuguese moved to FC Málaga in Spain . The club promptly rose from the Segunda Divisíon with second place. In the following season in the top Spanish league they finished eighth. Eliseu only made eight appearances in both seasons. In 2009/10 he moved to Lazio Rome in Italy , which he left on loan to Spain in January 2010. Before that he played in the Europa League , where he made his debut at European club level on August 20 against Sweden’s IF Elfsborg . Eliseu came on for Mauro Zárate in the 75th minute in the 3-0 win in the first leg of the first round of the UEFA Europa League in Rome .
Since the 2010/11 season he played again for Málaga FC . In July 2014 he signed a two-year contract with Benfica Lisbon .
National team
He made his debut for the Portuguese national team in the friendly international match against Estonia on June 10, 2009. He was substituted for Duda in the 68th minute and received a yellow card. He scored his first international goal on October 7, 2011 in the European Championship qualifier against Iceland (5-3).
At the European Championships in 2016 he was included in Portugal's squad and was used twice during the tournament: In the 3: 3 draw against Hungary in the third group game and in the quarter-finals against Poland (win on penalties). Both times he played for the full season. Portugal reached the final and became European champions for the first time.
