José Miguel da Rocha Fonte (born December 22, 1983 in Penafiel ) is a Portuguese football player .
Career
In the club
As a youth, José Fonte moved from his hometown club FC Penafiel to the Sporting Lisbon youth academy . There he was only used for the B-team in the third division. After an already signed contract with SC Salgueiros had become null and void due to the dissolution of this club, he moved to second division FC Felgueiras for the 2004/05 season . This club also had to struggle with licensing problems at the end of the season despite being relegated to the sport and had to be relegated. In the first half of the 2005/06 season Fonte played for Vitória Setúbal and made his debut there in the Primeira Liga . After promising performances, he was committed to the second half of the season at Benfica Lisbon , but immediately loaned to first division rivals FC Paços de Ferreira . In the 2006/07 season he played again on loan for the first division club CF Estrela Amadora .
After a total of 51 first division appearances in Portugal, another loan deal took him to the English second division club Crystal Palace for the 2007/08 season , with whom he reached the promotion play-offs at the end of the season. Thereupon Palace withdrew the purchase option and took Fonte under contract. After 82 second division games for the club, Fonte moved to the third division FC Southampton in the second half of the 2009/10 season , with whom he rose to the second division in the 2010/11 season and even made the march into the first class perfect in the following season . In the 2012/13 season , Fonte made his debut in the Premier League and from then on remained a constant in central defense alongside players such as Dejan Lovren and later Maya Yoshida . In August 2014 Fonte extended his contract with Southampton FC by three years until July 2017 and was named team captain.
During the winter break of the 2016/17 season , Fonté moved to league rivals West Ham United after seven years of club membership . In February 2018 he signed a contract with the Chinese first division club Dalian Yifang . After only six months, the contract was terminated and Fonte signed a two-year contract with OSC Lille .
In the national team
José Fonte played an international match for the Portuguese U-21s in 2006 . After that he was not considered for Portugal for a long time before he recommended himself for higher tasks with his consistently good performances in the Premier League. He was in comparatively high footballers age of nearly 31 years in October 2014 coach Fernando Santos for the first time in the cadre of senior national appeal. He then played his first international A match on November 18, 2014 in a friendly against Argentina (1-0).
At the European Championship 2016 he was in the Portuguese squad and was used in all games of the knockout round, including the 1-0 final win after extra time against hosts France , as a result of which Portugal won the first title in the association's history.
At the 2018 World Cup , he played all the preliminary round matches and the round of 16, in which Portugal was eliminated by Uruguay . In the Nations League 2018/19 he reached the final round with Portugal. In the semifinals against Switzerland , he came on for the injured Pepe . In the final against the Netherlands he was in the starting line-up and won the second title with Portugal with a 1-0 win.
