Jonathan Christian David (born January 14, 2000 in New York City - Brooklyn , New York , United States ) is a Canadian - Haitian football player . Born in the United States, he is also a US citizen .

After half a year in the youth of the Belgian first division club KAA Gent, he was promoted to the club's first team in mid-2018 and established himself in it. He moved to Ligue 1 in France in August 2020 and has been under contract with Lille OSC ever since . He has been playing for the teams of the Canadian Association since 2017 and made his debut for the A selection in September 2018 .

Career

Jonathan David began his career in the Gloucester Dragons Soccer youth team in 2010 . In 2011 he moved to the Ottawa Gloucester SC , then he went to the youth of the Ottawa International SC . At the beginning of 2018 he moved to KAA Gent in Belgium and spent another six months in the club's youth team.

For the 2018/19 season he was included in the first team squad. He made his debut in professional football on August 4, 2018 in the league game against SV Zulte Waregem . He was substituted on in the 77th minute for Roman Yaremchuk , then he managed to equalize the 1-1 final score in stoppage time.

In August 2020 David moved to Lille OSC , where he signed a five-year contract. The transfer fee of 30 million euros agreed for the transfer was the highest that a Belgian club ever received for a player.

National team

David first decided to play for the Canadian selections in 2015 . On September 9, 2018 he made his debut for the senior team in the CONCACAF Nations League in 8: 0 away win over the US Virgin Islands in Bradenton , Florida . He was called up in the starting line-up and over the entire season and participated in the success of his team with two goals and one assist.

At the Gold Cup 2019 he played in all three group matches and in the quarter-finals against Haiti . Although the Canadian national team were eliminated by a defeat in the quarterfinals, David was the top scorer of the tournament with six goals .

Personal

David was in January 2000, the son of Haitian parents in New York Borough Brooklyn born. They moved to Port-au-Prince with him three months later . In 2006 the family emigrated to Canada and settled in the capital Ottawa .
